So happy to reconnect through Giftsy. ❤️

5 years ago, when we first tested Giftsy, Melanie Shine stepped up and tested the website with me. ❤️

Now, three years later, with the completed platform, Melanie tried Giftsy again. (I added a photo of myself wearing Melanie’s dress from five years ago, when we were testing the website.)

This is what she wrote:

I scored these cute sandals at the swap. 😍

This clothing swap was called the Jen Angel Memorial Clothing Swap. ❤️

Jen Angel used to organize clothing swaps for the community. She was tragically killed during a robbery in Oakland in 2023. Her loss deeply affected the community🥲, and her close friends have continued the annual clothing swap in her honor, keeping her legacy and community spirit alive.

I found some men’s T-shirts because I heard that the homeless shelter I used to volunteer at in Oregon desperately needed men’s shirts.

Since I was already planning to go to Oregon to visit my family, it was the perfect opportunity to bring the clothing with me. I washed everything before donating it since they don’t have access to laundry facilities, packed it all in my suitcase, and brought it to Oregon.

I just dropped off the clothing at Blanchet House, where people experiencing homelessness can come for food and clothing.

One of the reasons I joined the Climatebase Fellowship is to connect with companies working in carbon credits and LCA methodology, and to explore how avoided-emissions measurement could eventually work at the individual level.

My dream is to build a system that rewards people for reusing secondhand items — similar to how people can receive incentives for choosing EVs and other lower-carbon options. I believe reuse can reduce our environmental impact at scale and make a meaningful contribution to addressing global warming.

A system like this could help shift consumer behavior and encourage and support people in making more sustainable choices.

I just got accepted into the Climatebase Fellowship. 🌎

I have never thought of myself as an environmental activist or someone trying to solve the world's environmental challenges.

But through building Giftsy, I began to see how much it could contribute in a positive way. I kept going because I believed in what I was building — and felt a responsibility to do my part for the world.
I have simply been trying to do what I believe is the right thing.

Now I've been accepted into the Climatebase Fellowship, where I'll have the opportunity to learn about environmental and climate challenges more deeply and in a more structured way.
