I had an idea for a poem a while ago to personify the concept of “The Better”. In my life, whenever someone has told me that something is in my best interest “even if it doesn’t seem like it right now”, I always roll my eyes. How could anyone or anything know what’s better for me than myself???? As I’ve gotten older, I realized other people are right (only sometimes) and that fate has a funny way of doing things. The best for you finds you in very very strange places, especially in those you typically refuse to look. And so, I’ve had a complicated relationship with The Better and envision him as someone scary but surprisingly gentle and wise. This poem took me a long time to perfect, but I am very proud of the outcome and wanted it posted for all to read; my own little folktale about the man who lives in the lighthouse along the cliffside!!

I took the film photo around the same time I came up with the idea!

The beautiful BTS photos by @_hotlinebeth are here! I genuinely cannot contain myself when it comes to my excitement for Nebulous! I truly believe that the work done on this project aligns with the vision in my brain so well that it’s uncanny. I feel so grateful to all of the wonderful people who understood me, trusted me, and wanted to help bring these complex feelings to life. An idea so experimental, ambiguous, and fragile like this story is not something to be trifled with, and its obstacles could have also easily led it into the scrap bin. But we were not afraid to get our hands dirty!!!! I don’t know how I got so lucky to connect and work with such thoughtful and inspiring artists, but trust me, I don’t take it for granted. Thanks to everyone who helped with this project and I can’t wait to share the finished product with the world!!!! 🫧
*the last slide is from notes I took while getting a tarot card reading back in March. The reading ended up igniting the idea for the screenplay. Having only ever heard the word sporadically in my life before, I realized I spelled it wrong and squeezed in an ‘o’. Little did I know we’d be writing NEBULOUS on a slate just a few months later😚 by @bellakovar

here’s some fun behind the scenes extras if you’re wondering at all about how Celestial Body was made—> I picked up this 70s astrology book from a used bookstore a while ago. When reading through all of my house placements, the explanation of Neptune in the 4th really made me feel things. This inspired the opening line of my favorite poem in the collection called “Jellyfish”🪼

The quote “Is it better to speak or to die?” has plagued me ever since watching Call Me By Your Name at Filmstreams in Omaha as a teenager. I did some research about the origins of the story. A french woman from the 16th century named Marguerite de Navarre wrote a collection of short stories, one of which included the quote. I mention the knight and his plight in “Marbles”!

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman changed my life. I included this quote as the epigraph! Both Celestial Body and my short film Nebulous are vessels for attempting to capture the beautiful mystery of a human soul👻

While stamping shirts and binding all the books, I watched the entirety of Seinfeld for the first time ever!

While writing the book, I did a lot of tarot card readings for myself and others. It’s such a lovely and reflective process and I encourage everyone to get their own deck!!! It really itches new parts of your brain🃏

I did a lot of crossword puzzles in between poetry writing!😁

In Adzes and Anvils, I reflect on my childhood dreams and where I grew up! Here is a photo of little me getting ready to make some snow angels!!!

After my release party with my closest friends, I received two beautiful flower bouquets and put them on my fridge. I wish they would have lived forever! I pressed some to keep💐

Celestial Body’s cover was extremely hard for me to decide on and create. Here’s one of the contenders in the process….I prefer the one that made the final cut lol. I was frustrated for a bit because I really didn’t like any of the first ones I came up with
