Bella Kiser and her interpretation of The Queen of Cups for The House of Tarot.

The Queen of Cups understands that listening is care. It’s not passive, nor polite. It is intentional presence - the kind that slows the moment enough for truth to surface without being pulled or forced.

“Bella Kiser’s, MUSIC BOX INTERIOR, invites visitors to lie down, press their face into darkness, and listen. Quilted with care the rust-colored bed-like sculpture contains hidden microphones that amplify the user’s breath in real time. What begins as a private act of inhale and exhale, becomes a shared soundscape, offered outward.” -BK

Bella Kiser’s installation, “Music Box Interior”, is in collaboration with Hailey Johnson, Jordan Johnson and Hammerspace Gallery. A special mention to photographer Isabelle Tavares, whose lens brought Kiser’s tarot card to life.

Meet Bella, one of our newest House of Tarot artists!

Bella Kiser is an interdisciplinary mixed-race Filipino American artist from Chicago, IL currently based in Detroit, MI. She uses fiber, sculpture, performance, and sound to build her world of Soft Architecture: a malleable and ever-changing building technique that is in constant exchange with memory. It is a fabritecture of susceptible surfaces formed from intangible experiences. Her work explores topics such as identity, memory, otherness, comfort, and home. Kiser is a graduate of Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Combined Degree Program where she received a BFA in Studio Art and BS in Environmental Studies. Her work has appeared in exhibits nationally, with shows and artist talks in Detroit, Chicago, New York, and Boston including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Zhou B. Art Center, Hammerspace Gallery, Comfort Station, Open Source Gallery, and the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. Kiser was also a 2024 Artist-in-Residence at the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation.

Bella Kiser’s “Music Box Interior” invites visitors to lie down, press their face into darkness, and listen. Quilted with care the rust-colored bed-like sculpture contains hidden microphones that amplify the user’s breath in real time. What begins as a private act of inhale and exhale, becomes a shared soundscape, offered outward.

The space is designed for one or two bodies. When occupied by two, the piece becomes a quiet choreography of mutual regulation. Breath may sync or drift apart, revealing patterns of anxiety, rest, attunement, or interruption. The experience is meditative, intimate, and subtly tense in the presence of another. Echoing Bella’s interest in sound ecology and Murray Schafer’s concept of the “soundscape,” the piece reframes the act of listening as a form of care. It is not a retreat from the world, but a way to stay within it—through body, breath, and stillness. Listening becomes a kind of touch, a way of being with another, even in silence. by @bellikisser

GIRLHOOD invites us to reflect on youth with a sense of distance and clarity. Girlhood is often viewed through an innocent lens, reminiscing on the bows in our hair and ballet flats covering painted toes. However, these depictions frequently overlook the diversity of experiences shaped by race, ethnicity, identity, etc.

“These artists’ works are steeped in the sentimentality of their formative years. Watching these pieces come to life and engaging in meaningful conversations with the artists has been a profoundly connective experience that I am excited to share with the community.,” said Hayla Hay, Curator.

Through this exhibition, GIRLHOOD seeks to expand the narrative, inviting an inclusive dialogue about what girlhood means across different lived experiences. by @bellikisser
