As we look forward to 2023, we're also thinking about the long history of 2 Washington Street.

For centuries this property has meant something to the Peabody community. In fact, it has been a gathering spot longer than Peabody has been known as Peabody.

It is truly a gem of the North Shore.

What you may not know is that another building existed here before the house we're restoring was built in 1897.

We're talking about the original Bell Tavern. The tavern was constructed when the area was part of Danvers, which years before had split from Salem.

Beginning in 1775, the tavern was a notable central meeting location during the Revolutionary War. Local minutemen even gathered in the courtyard before marching off to the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

The more we work to restore this property, the more we learn.

Stay tuned for other stories in the New Year. taken in Washington Street Historic District (Peabody, Massachusetts) by @bellinnpeabody
