Since there’s been a lot of curiosity about how/what I’m using to record these videos, I thought I’d share a little bit about the recording rig that I made to do this.

Quite frankly, it isn’t much more than a glorified camera on a stick that I lower into the harbor with some lights so we can see what’s going on and some bait, usually some locally caught store bought fish, attached at the very end of the pole jutting out of the main structure.

In total there are 5 lights attached at different spots to help improve visibility during day and night dives. The main camera that I use to record now is a DJI Osmo 6 action camera, which I use to record in 4k resolution. Additionally there is a GoPro Hero 7 that I have converted into a live viewing camera so that I am able to see what’s going on down there at any given point while I am recording. I’d like to eventually get this thing set up so that I could theoretically do live streams of each recording session, but I haven’t quite figured out how to do it yet, but I am very much open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas!

Regardless, this is the right I currently use to record these videos and I am constantly tinkering with it to improve and add new capabilities, so it’ll likely continue to change over time!

Do not, I repeat, do not release your unwanted goldfish, or any other pets for that matter, into the Baltimore Harbor. I’m sure @marylanddnr @bluewaterbmore and @healthyharborbaltimore can agree with me on this point.

I was never really sure what I was expecting going into this project, but seeing a roughly 10 inch goldfish was not on my bingo card that’s for sure. For scale, the pipe on the end of the rig has an outer diameter of 2.75 inches, so do with that what you will.
