“Second-generation businesses don’t grow after the founder.”

That’s the sentiment you often hear on the streets.

But there are always exceptions to the rule—and Jide Martins of @bemilsecurity is one of them.

Jide loved the family business from an early age. As a teenager, he even worked as a security guard at Guinness Headquarters in Lagos. He went on to study Security Management at university.

Yes, you read that right. There is actually a university degree in Security Management! 😂

But Jide’s story is bigger than the business he inherited.

He proved that youth can be an advantage, not a disadvantage, when he took over the family business.

He proved that a son can do more with what he has been given.

He says it was GRACE.

But we want to hear the story behind the grace.
What did he do differently?
What did he inherit beyond the business?
And how did he take what his father built and build beyond it?

Join Jide Martins at the Building Beyond You Conference 2026 as he shares his story.

Thank you, Jide. You are a true BEYONDER!

May we all raise successors who are equipped, prepared and courageous enough to do more with what we leave in their hands. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

There are moments in leadership when experience stops being enough, and you have to confront the kind of leader you really need to become.

At Building Beyond You 2026, I reflected on some of the lessons that have shaped my journey at Bemil. From making decisions that were difficult but necessary, each experience has reinforced one thing: building a business that outlives you requires more than hard work and good intentions.

It requires knowing when to put the business first, accepting that mistakes will happen, giving others room to lead, and building the systems and governance that allow the institution to stand beyond any one individual.

Some lessons are uncomfortable. Some decisions stay with you. But leadership demands that you learn, adapt and keep building.

Because the real measure of what we build is not just how far it goes under our leadership, but whether it is strong enough to keep going without us.

A guarding post looks simple from the outside, someone standing at a gate.

But behind a well-run post is a process: verification protocols, access logs, patrol routines and the judgment to know when something isn’t right.

At Bemil, guarding isn’t a static presence. It’s an active discipline, backed by training, supervision and accountability.

That’s what separates a guard from a Bemil officer.

Looking for trained guarding officers for your business? Let’s talk.

Every great business has a beginning, and ours started with a dog, a handler and N500.
My parents started Bemil in 1978, and growing up around the business gave me a front-row seat to the hard work and sacrifices behind its growth.

Today, leading Bemil into its second generation is a responsibility I never take lightly.
Sharing our story at the My Family, My Business event was a privilege. It reminded me that a family legacy is not simply something you inherit; it is something you must continue to earn, strengthen and build upon.

I’m proud of how far we’ve come, grateful to the people who have been part of our journey, and mindful that there is still much more to build.
The goal is not just to preserve what our parents built, but to leave it stronger for the generations that follow.
