BD Ambassadors @chris_deuto and @ben.sotero successfully making the first free ascent of ‘A Resistencia’ (VI 2,500ft 5.13c) in Brazil.

Joined by photographer @dantbaum and local Brazilian cowboy @andrejunior, the team spent 7 ground-up days on the wall battling jungle conditions and dehydration to reach the summit.

“The route climbs the most obvious feature on Pedra Da Fortaleza’s proudest aspect. With 12 of the 20 pitches graded 5.12 or above, we believe it’s the new hardest bigwall free climb in Brazil. Chris Deuto successfully sent each pitch during our push, but what truly unlocked the full free route was the collaboration between ascent parties.

Established in 2019 by a legendary group of Brazilian developers (Ed Padilha, Willian Lacerda, Vladesir Machado, Thomas Kampf), ‘A Resistencia’ has seen only two subsequent ascents, including this one, and a free-attempt by Ben Sotero with another team also in 2019.

The route’s name comes from a notable protest organized by local farmers. They stood against the granite mining corporations in the area who wanted to purchase Fortaleza, thus saving the monolith and its otherworldly beauty. It seems resistance lives in the stone itself; an energy etched into the darkened walls, humming between islands of cacti. Fortaleza tested us, and the memory of that fight will remain in our hearts.”

Some more from Mt Watkins. Watching @chris_deuto and @ben.sotero go to work on this route was nothing short of epic. It was a privilege to witness and be along for the ride!

It was also a joy to shoot this entire climb on film. My favorite medium and definitely has me psyched for some bigger shooting goals next time in the valley. by @ben.sotero

7 months after packing our bags in Boulder Colorado, I can finally try and get some perspective on this trip that has come to its last week.
At the end of August @chris_deuto @dantbaum and I, got ready for what would be a pretty mega climbing trip. We packed all the gear and stoke we had and set off to our first stop: Brasil.
We went bouldering at Iperó, and then set off to climb a big-wall in the jungle with the hopes of freeing it. It was dirty, wet and really fun. And we did it! Feeling very light and strong we went to Serra do Cipó for some world-class sport climbing and to Conceição do Mato Dentro for some sweet bouldering. After roadtripping through the Southeast portion of my home country we came back to São Paulo already stoked with the outcome of our trip despite only being a month-in to this spiritual voyage. We went to gyms, saw friends and celebrated a ton.
We re-packed and went to El Chaltén, in the Argentinean Patagonia in mid October and got very cold very fast compared to shirtless climbing in the sun. We climbed Guillaumet as a team and got motivated for our bigger dreams, but never really created expectations because we had over 4 months in Chaltén. After a crazy learning window of 10 days of good weather and bad strategy we realized we’d have to lock-in to do what we wanted.
Sure enough, next window came and we climbed Cerro Torre! Felt a little incomprehensible at the moment, since the Compressor Route has always been unattainable in my mind and we just pulled it off first try at the end of November. My life dream-climb had been completed and I still had 4 months ahead of me. wtf. After cruxing out mentally in what the hell I was going to do with my life, I found a fun passion that emerged out of nowhere: trail-running. I ran two marathons and an Ultramarathon over the span of a month and saw I liked that shit.
Made too many friends to list here, but you know who you are!! The people I met really helped me see another perspective on life, it wasn’t about what I climbed or how strong I was it was about being a good human and enjoying this lifestyle. the maxi tranqi one.
At the end we partied our asses off and enjoyed life.

fomos rápido em alguns momentos e dem devagar em outros, muito aprendizado sempre em Chaltén.
