Prisoner Declan Winkless has had his sentence increased after the Court of Appeal ruled that his original punishment for prison smuggling and misconduct in public office was too lenient.Winkless, who is already serving an 11-year sentence for aggravated burglary, had originally been handed an additional three years and four months after pleading guilty to seven offences at Northampton Crown Court. However, following an appeal by the Solicitor General, that sentence has now been increased to five years, to be served consecutively.The case involved an inappropriate relationship between Winkless and former prison officer Alicia Novas, who was just 18 and had recently started working in the prison service. Prosecutors said she smuggled cannabis, tobacco and two mobile phones into HMP Five Wells and HMP Peterborough, passed on confidential prison intelligence, including the identity of a prison informant, and became involved in a relationship with the inmate. Winkless also filmed their sexual encounters and later leaked the videos on Snapchat.Novas’ three-year prison sentence remains unchanged.
