Toboggan run in Funchal… well, when in Madeira!

It’s one of those things you just have to experience. The Monte toboggan run dates back to the early 1800s, when locals used wicker sledges as a fast way to travel down from the hills into Funchal. Today, it’s steered by skilled “carreiros” in traditional dress, guiding you through the streets, no engines, just pure technique (and a bit of bravery 😅).

Pico do Areeiro / Stairway to Heaven at sunset… and honestly, where do you even begin.

Some things in life are just so beautiful they don’t feel real. Moments that can’t be recreated, no matter how many photos you take.

1800m up, standing above a sea of clouds, we were quite literally on top of the world.

It was one of those moments that catches you off guard… the kind that brings a tear to your eye without you even realising.

Tucked away in the heart of Funchal, Blandy’s Wine Lodge is one of those places you could easily walk past without realising what’s inside… but behind the doors is a whole hidden world of rooms, ageing barrels, and centuries of history.

We did the self-guided wine tour and got to try 4 different 10-year-old Madeira wines and honestly, learned so much along the way.

Madeira wine is completely different to your typical wine. It’s a fortified wine, meaning a grape spirit is added during the process, which boosts the alcohol content and stops fermentation early. But what really makes it unique is how it’s aged, exposed to heat and oxygen on purpose. Sounds strange, but it’s what gives Madeira its rich, complex flavours and incredible longevity (some bottles can last decades… even centuries once opened!).

The flavours? Think anything from dry and nutty to rich, sweet, caramel-like notes, way more depth than we expected.

Such a cool experience and definitely one to add to your list if you’re in Madeira. by @ben_hodds

Day 1 in Madeira

After The General had disc replacement surgery, we decided it was time to slow things down and escape somewhere special… so we hopped over to Madeira for a bit of well-earned R&R.

Warmer weather on our skin, stunning scenery in every direction, and the constant, calming sound of the ocean… pure bliss. 🌊☀️

Day 1 was all about switching off, breathing it in, and just soaking up the moment. No rush, no pressure… just being present and grateful.
