It’s really hard to believe that Doug is gone. He was an inspired and enormously talented musician, and I’m honored to have collaborated with him in White Magic alongside @mirawhitemagic back in 2009. I kept in touch with him over the years, and always made a point to see him when I was back visiting NYC. He had such a great sense of humor and I recall a lot of joking around and laughing - it’s easy for me to see his smile and hear his laugh when I think about him.
Doug memories: Doug scouring the floor of a venue looking for his bag of weed (this happened often).
Seeing him perform at Union Pool as Highlife and blowing my mind.
His finger-picking prowess on that old Gibson of his. Him playing Nick Drake for me at his mom’s flat in London, telling me how Nick used to walk around the patch of woods there.
Rehearsing with White Magic at their dumbo rehearsal space and just feeling so great making music together.
The tour we did opening up for Bonnie Prince Billy @wignifier and taking mushrooms at Pfieffer Beach at Big Sur on a day off.
Gonna miss you, Doug. It just doesn’t seem fair that you’re gone so soon. I know you had so much music still in you, and I was always waiting for that album that was gonna blow everybody’s minds out of their skulls.
I was playing guitar today, thinking of you, and I swear I was channeling you, or maybe you were visiting me (who knows how these things work…)
You were really one of a kind, Doug. I already miss ya. I hope your spirit is flying free somewhere.

Performing with my band, Drone Theory, at the Small Intestine (DIY venue), Hartford Rd, Baltimore in 1996 or 97. I think we played with Behind Closed Doors that evening. Found a stack of old photos… by @ben_mcconnell

The fabled Grass record is finally being released! This was a super group of sorts featuring members of Espers, Brightblack Morning Light, Feathers, Currituck Co., Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, etc. during the so-called ´Freak Folk Revival’ when we were all playing shows together and playing in each other’s bands…

From @greg_weeks_music_official :

It’s official. Eighteen years after the original recording, the Grass record is finally available for pre-order.

Link: https://grassband.bandcamp.com/album/grass

You can listen to the single now and decide for yourself if it lives up to the hype. This record captures an incredibly brief but unforgettable experience shared by me, @brookesietinsons, @kwkbarker, @mearao, @ottohauserdrums, @ben_mcconnell, and everyone who came out to support us at the shows.

Thanks to @spiritualpajamas and @folkyeahvents for standing by all these years and helping bring this to life.

More updates coming soon.
