It’s highly unlikely to have its own Beatport tag but one of my favourite genres of dance music is that of ridiculous noise with a beat.

You know what I mean; those songs where the producer has hit on such a magical noise that all they have to do is manipulate it over a beat and magic appears. Sometimes they are bass noises, often they mimic animals and sometimes they are just plain bizarre sounds.

It was Sully’s recent single Chatter that brought it to mind: in it, the Norwich producer uses his production magic to mimic a load of bird noises, under which he slams a drum & bass beat. Lovely.

Obviously, I couldn’t just leave it there though. So here is my guide to what I am calling boom-chick-wobble, aka 10 of the best dance music songs built around thoroughly ridiculous noises.

I reviewed the new - gorgeously unsettling - @agnesobel record for @pitchfork and I even got away with a Deep Forest reference. “For music that is so unashamedly beautiful, there is something distinctly unnerving about The Meaning of Flowers… “ Anyway, amazing record, do give it a try.

This week on the Line Noise podcast, we have a very special head to head featuring Mike Paradinas - aka µ-Ziq - and Frank Naughton - also aka µ-Ziq, in the early days. The interview is to celebrate the release of Tango N’Vectif (The Complete Sessions), a glorious re-edition of the debut µ-Ziq album, which was composed by both Paradinas and Naughton and released on Rephlex back in 1993. It’s their first joint interview in many years. We talked about jazz funk, Blue Innocence, borrowing gear, their very oldest music, the best µ-Ziq album, Kingston upon Thames’ incredible electronic music scene in the early 90s, a little bit of Aphex and much much more.
