Naar aanleiding van zijn solotentoonstelling ‘The Passenger’, van 31.Okt.26 t/m 21.Feb.27 in @smakgent, krijgt de Belgische schilder @bendteyckermans carte blanche om een filmprogramma samen te stellen bij @sphinxcinema.

Voor zijn selectie liet Bendt zich inspireren door het werk van Harry Kümel. Hij koos voor 'De komst van Joachim Stiller' (1976) en 'Malpertuis' (1973), twee films die net als zijn schilderijen een mysterieuze, haast magisch-realistische sfeer oproepen.

In ‘The Passenger’ vertaalt Bendt alledaagse scènes uit zijn atelier en vanop straat naar composities die ruimte laten voor suggestie en mysterie. Ook de locaties spelen een rol in zijn keuze: de ene film speelt zich af in Antwerpen, waar hij woont, de andere in Gent, waar hij later deze maand tentoonstelt.

S.M.A.K. presents the first institutional solo exhibition by Belgian artist @bendteyckermans, bringing together a series of recent works. His highly narrative paintings weave elements from everyday life — objects from his studio, friends, or details from the street — into dreamlike, mysterious compositions. Alongside paintings, the exhibition features sculptural elements, a short film, and drawings offering a unique insight into the artist’s thought process.

In ‘The Passenger’, Eyckermans moves between interiors and street scenes, exploring how the objects around us and the spaces we inhabit shape our identity. Whether scaffolding, markings on façades, or memories associated with a particular place, these seemingly incidental details unconsciously become part of who we are, how we perceive our surroundings, and how we think.
