My mother, Josephine (Jody) Hensley died this past Saturday, September 19th. There was no warning and there wasn’t anything that could be done to save her.

My mom was not just a beacon of light in this world, she was an absolute force of nature. She was kind, loving, beautiful, and cared about people with a ferocity that could shake the heavens.

The world was not always easy for her, but she loved it so passionately. She loved all creatures big, small, soft, scaled or otherwise. She loved beautiful things: art, music, architecture, fashion. She loved religion and spirituality and tradition and history and government — not ever for the ways that they can be divisive, but for the ways they bring people together and force us to care for one another. My mom loved puzzles and games. She was so silly and had the best laugh. Above all she loved her friends and she loved her family. I believe her favorite thing was when all of the people that she loved were together. My niece Ava came into this world earlier than expected and while we couldn’t imagine that this would be the case, my mom spent her final days holding and loving her.

I don’t know if I ever described my relationship with my mom this way while she was here, but I think she was my best friend. We were so similar in so many ways. She taught me so many of the things that I am proud of in myself. She taught me how to care about where I was and who I was. She taught me how to sing. She taught me how to be mindful and how to face hard things. She taught me how to be confident in myself and how to protect myself and others. We spoke often. And while my heart is absolutely broken in losing her, she taught me how to show up, how to be generous, and how to care for people and things. That is a legacy I promise to carry.

This past weekend I graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance with a minor in Psychology! Many, many thanks to my family, Corey, Terry, Karina, Dr. Jacobs, Professor Boldrey, my friends, and so many more who have showed me love and supported me through this journey💜!
What’s next, you might ask? I am headed back to Massachusetts to pursue a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music. I’m looking forward to living in Boston and reconnecting with my roots! taken in Northwestern University by @benedict_hens

My first two weeks in Salzburg have incredible! I’ve been so fortunate to be able to meet and work with so many talented musicians and really amazing people. This city is beyond beautiful and the culture around music, especially classical music, is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I have so much to be proud of this pride season! I’m proud to live in a country that lets me live and love my authentic self, proud of all the incredible people who have devoted and given their lives to making that a reality, proud of my incredible friends and family who love and support me, proud that I am able to love this incredible guy so openly (even though we weren’t together today I could help including him in this post because look how beautiful he is @corey.s.everly), and proud of so much more. We’ve come a long way in this country and we’ve got a long way to go so let’s keep marching forward!
