Turps Studio Programme 24/26
POSTS STORIES REELS
Insolvent brings together painting and installation that explores slowness, hesitation, and inefficiency as forms of resistance. Made inside frictional lives – including artists from the Turps Studio Programme – the exhibition considers art-making as a stubbornly human and imperfect activity, rejecting the demands of productivity and depthless perfections. 1. Daisy Ye Borrowed Ground 2023/26. Plant dyes, earth pigments, beeswax, rust powder, and oil on canvas, 40x50cm. @daisyye19 2. Mina Courtauld Sheepish, 2026. Saint Genesius of Rome is the patron saint of actors. During a play mocking christianity for the Roman Emperor, he became so immersed in his performance that he had a conversion experience. After which he would not renounce his new-found Christian faith and was promptly martyred by the Emperor. Ha Ha. I’ve been thinking about deserts, seas and space this last while. The empty and disconnected. Thank you to ALL at Turps this last couple of years, its been so good I’m sneaking back for a third. ‘’Benedict Johnson, though not a Catholic anymore, is inspired by the theatre of devotional imagery, reliquaries, explorations of the occult, pound shops and theme parks along with discarded items and thoughts. These manifestations explore a ‘fantasy of aliveness’, whose presence may make a choice not to be surveilled or fully available to the lit, visible world. A balancing act between communication and exposure, constant availability, legibility and reductivity which was born out of working through a personal reluctance to fix and expose themself in the stasis of an artwork. Interested in the history of thinking about the nature of self-hood and the experience of a self expanding beyond the body's borders, Benedict's paintings behave with flexibility. Often multiple, re-made, un-made, unfixed, they elect for blurred boundaries. Deserts, seas, space. From expansiveness the works become, alive to the social and political ramifications of this expanded inclusive self, to radical ambiguity, and a partial rejection of narratives of completeness and perfection’’ by @benedictjohnsonstudio

A selection of small works from the last while. Probably not tough enough, or flawed so that they could not make their way outside the studio 🤷🏽‍♂️ But I loved having them around. Cut flowers. The first one is called 'Wasp' by @benedictjohnsonstudio
