At last, the first cool morning of autumn. Time to take out the old waxed Barbour, the Aquascutum mackintosh, the Carminas, and the knitwear. God, I love Paris in the fall. by @benhjackson

Exploring the Institut de France this weekend. A palace built not for a king, but for ideas.

Born from the Enlightenment, it remains one of the great centers of intellectual life in Paris. Libraries, academies, globes, carved oak, green baize and centuries of thought collected beneath one roof.

Far from Paris for an Appalachian adventure by @benhjackson

A proper study, a window, and silence. Complete and utter silence.

It was in an old French country house in the north of France last week that I finally conquered an article I’d been putting off for months.

Why here, in a bed-and-breakfast run by a quiet Frenchman who made our breakfast every morning?

Black coffee in a silver Queen Anne pot, croissants and baguettes from the local village with Normandy butter, and ear ringing silence, save the sound of the birds, the wind in the leaves, and the horses out in the field.

Most importantly, absolutely no activities of any kind to do. Most would consider this incredibly dull. It’s not a tropical destination, and it sure isn’t an impressive château.

But it provides exactly the type of vacuum for true deep work to be done. For your mind to be free and at peace.

Here I found just enough silence to hear my own thoughts again. by @benhjackson

Curiosity must have a place to thrive.

For me, I have to take a break from the digital every once in a while and dive in to my curiosities on the page.

A home library is perhaps one of the greatest expressions of an ever-growing curiosity where you can explore new obsessions and ideas.

In my most recent article on Substack, I write about how to cure your home library and choose the books that sparked that curiosity in yourself. Check it out. Link in the bio. by @benhjackson

D-Day Reenactment on Utah Beach.

My French father-in-law and I took the the beach at 6:32am this morning in Normandy. The exact moment
82 years ago that some of the bravest men ever walk the earth, set out on their journey to saved the free world.

Some of them made it as far as Berlin. Others perished here on this very sand. Today we remember them.

Thank you to all of those who fought for freedom.
Airborne all the way!

Keep a lookout for an article coming out soon on D-Day celebrations in France. by @benhjackson
