Research in Progress — Issue 02

A stranger told me he’d released 89 songs.

Not because every song was perfect.

Because every song deserved to exist.

Ironically...

his biggest success almost stopped him from creating.

He kept trying to recreate the version of himself that had gone viral.

Until he realized he’d already become someone else.

Archives don’t preserve perfection.

They preserve transformation.

Imagine your life became a museum tomorrow.

What would visitors understand about you?

What would still be missing?

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS [01] - Human x Machine

AI can generate images.

In seconds.

Thousands of them.

But images have never been the scarce resource.

Meaning is.

The future of creative work is not about competing with machines.

It is about becoming better observers.

Better translators.

Better question askers.

Technology changes.

The questions remain.

What becomes uniquely human when everyone has access to the same tools? by @benjaminmurenzi

Every identity begins somewhere.

This one began years ago.

Not as a logo, but as a way of observing, translating, and connecting ideas across cultures, disciplines, and mediums.

As the practice evolved, the symbol had to evolve with it.

This isn’t a rebrand.

It’s the next chapter of an archive that’s still being written.

The 52 — Week 20 - Translation Studies pt. III ~ FC Mon Jardin

Maybe home isn’t a place.
Maybe it’s a collection of translations.

Born in Brussels.
Raised in Affligem.
College in Antwerp.
Student entrepreneur and eventual dropout when I was living in Ghent, while working with Nice Arts back in Brussels.

And now Barcelona — the city I dreamed of living in as a kid.

For this render, I brought together the visual languages of the places that shaped me: colours, heraldry, symbols and typography.

A personal coat of arms.
A visual garden of everywhere I’ve been.

It also explains a little bit of the ´Duke of Pajottenland’.

As a kid, I wanted to be either a football player or an inventor. Ronaldinho on one side, the fictional scientist designing the hero’s ridiculously convenient gadgets on the other.

Maybe I’ve been doing some version of both ever since.

Building worlds. Making tools. Translating places into things.

The 52 — Week 19 - Translation Studies pt.II ~ Laila’s Boot

Some weeks in Research in Progress happen exactly as planned.
Some don’t.

Last week I didn’t publish.
Not because the research stopped, but something else needed attention first.

I’ve been spending some time preparing something in the background that I’m not quite ready to talk about yet.
More on that soon.
For now, back to work.

This week’s translation started with a rough sketch from my friend @lxiilaa

The task was simple: take an idea drawn by hand and translate it into form.

The sketches became a series of footwear explorations — translating lines into volumes, proportions into structure, and an intuitive drawing into something that could eventually exist as an object.
Which brings us back tot the question behind Translation Studies:

What survives when an idea changes state ?
Sometimes the answer is obvious.
Sometimes it’s a shape.
Sometimes a feeling
Sometimes it’s something you only notice after the translation is complete.

Research in Progress — Issue 03
When does a community become a culture?

Sometimes design isn’t about making something new.
Sometime it’s about recognizing what was already trying to emerge.

This week’s research looks at timing, system thinking, creative collaboration and what I learned studying the evolution of Platine’s visual identity.

Next stop:
Closing weekend.
New conversations.
New observations.

Share this with someone who might enjoy reading it.

Ps: Instagram only allows 20 tagged accounts per post, The full list of photographers, artists, collectives and collaborators featured throughout this research will be tagged in the comments. If I’ve accidentally overlooked someone, please let me know so I can add them. taken in Brussels, Belgium by @benjaminmurenzi
