The Black-Crowned Night Heron usually hunts from dusk to dawn, they avoid direct competition with day-hunting herons this way. Beyond fish and frogs, they will eat mice, insects, and even the eggs or nestlings of other birds. This Coyote followed me for about 2 minutes so i assume there was a den nearby, the coyote was likely "escorting" me out of its territory. I was teaching a young girl (10 years old )how to work my camera when someone started a conversation with me. During that conversation she slowly inched to the side and captured this shot of her brother. I was nervous watching my gear walk away and thrilled when I saw what was on the memory card! There is something really special about handing over a camera to someone who is eager to learn—they see the world with completely fresh eyes, unburdened by technical rules or habits.She clearly has a natural eye for timing and composition! Capturing a genuine, spontaneous portrait of a sibling isn't easy, but she managed to catch a moment that feels totally authentic. It’s usually those "stolen" moments when the photographer steps away and the best most candid magic happens. Depending on when and where you spot them, the American Golden-Plover can look like two entirely different birds Breeding Season: They sport a striking black face, breast, and belly, framed by a clean white stripe that curls down the neck. Their backs are densely speckled with glittering gold, black, and white. Nonbreeding Season: They trade the bold black-and-white contrast for a much more camouflage-friendly, warm, speckled golden-brown plumage with a soft, pale eyebrow stripe. When eaglets ( bald eagles ) first hatch, they are semi-altricial — weak, covered in light down, and unable to stand.The Early Crawl: In the first couple of weeks, they move by "scooting." They pull themselves forward using the stubs of their wings and push off with their legs, shuffling through the soft lining of the nest (usually grasses, moss, and fine twigs).The "Hock" Phase: By weeks 3 and 4, they begin rising up on their hocks (the joint on the bird's leg that looks like a backward-bending knee, but is anatomically closer to an ankle). They walk clumsily on these joints before their feet and toes can support their full weight.Nest Hygiene (Slice-Casting): Even before they can stand fully, they possess an incredible instinct for nest cleanliness. They will wobble backward to the very edge of the nest, tilt forward on their toes, elevate their tail, and forcefully eject their liquid waste completely clear of the nest. This behavior keeps their living space sanitary.Standing on Toes: By week 6 or 7, their bones have hardened and their leg muscles have strengthened. They graduate to standing fully upright on their large, taloned toes, walking around the nest platform with the same proud, steady gait as their parents. The Lesser Yellowlegs orange alert status from the State of the Birds report is a major wake-up call. Because they rely heavily on transient, shallow wetlands during migration, they are incredibly vulnerable to:Agricultural drainage and wetland development across the Great Plains and coastal stopovers.Climate shifts drying up ephemeral ponds (temporary spring pools) before the birds can use them to refuel.Exposure to pesticides in agricultural runoff, which depletes the aquatic insects they rely on.Safeguarding the boreal forest wetlands where they breed, alongside protecting small, muddy farm wetlands throughout the migratory flyways, is absolutely essential if we want to reverse this trend. #lesseryellowlegs #shorebirds #birdingphotography #conservation #birdsofontario by @benjiesbarn

The Bay of Fundy is a truly incredible landscape. The sheer scale of that visual transformation is hard to wrap your head around until you see it in action. Because the Bay of Fundy has the highest tidal range on the planet—with water levels shifting by as much as 16 meters (53 feet) twice a day—the entire character of the coastline changes completely every few hours. This photo was taken with the water levels low , in a matter of hours the tide will roll back in and cover the dark areas of formation .
