Ceramic, concrete and 3D print each bring something different to Amsterdammertje: colour, weight, texture, precision and protection.

Rather than hiding these differences, the design allows each material and component to remain visible as part of the object’s construction.

The result is a layered object in which material, function and assembly all contribute to the final expression.

By combining the precision of digital production methods with hands-on craftsmanship, the components come together with accuracy and intention without losing the human character of the object.

From fragile to more resilient and expressive.

Drying slip-cast pieces takes time and patience, allowing moisture to gradually leave the object while the clay shrinks by around 10%. At this stage, the pieces become solid but are still fragile.

Bisque firing hardens the ceramic body and makes it more resilient, preparing it for finishing and glazing.

Glazing then takes the pieces from blank to expressive, adding colour, depth and surface character. The glaze was carefully selected to closely reflect the deep tone of the Amsterdammertjes found throughout Amsterdam.

The final glaze firing transforms the ceramic body into its finished form while preserving the small variations that make each piece unique.

Details matter, even when they are rarely seen.

This 3D-printed insert is barely visible once the object is assembled, but it plays an important role in protecting both the concrete base and the surface beneath it from scratches.

A subtle brand mark is integrated into the print, giving a quiet reference to its origin without drawing attention away from the object itself.

From 3D-printed form to cast concrete.

The concrete base begins with a digitally developed mold, allowing the geometry to be reproduced with precision before the material introduces its own texture and variation.

Once cast and cured, each concrete base is demolded from the silicone and refined by hand before becoming part of the final object.

Designed to hold its own within a space.

Amsterdammertje combines contrasting materials, colour and texture in a form that feels both familiar and distinct.

Placed in an interior, it becomes a quiet reference to Amsterdam while remaining an object in its own right.

A piece that adds character and a sense of connection without overpowering its surroundings.

From 3D-printed master to plaster mold.

This is one of the steps behind the Amsterdammertje; translating a digitally developed form into a mold system designed for slip casting.

An important part of the ongoing exchange between digital precision and hands-on craft at benleito.studio.

Materials come together through carefully defined transitions.

Glossy ceramic meets raw concrete, shifting from smooth and expressive to solid and grounded.
Rather than disguising the differences between the materials, the design allows each one to retain its own character.

Made and refined in Amsterdam, close to home.

A look at the slip-casting process behind the Amsterdammertje.

Liquid clay is poured into a multi-part plaster mold created from a digitally developed, 3D-printed master. A custom 3D-printed funnel guides the slip into the mold while allowing air to escape.

As the plaster absorbs moisture, a ceramic wall begins to form inside the mold and the excess slip is poured out again.

This is the moment liquid becomes solid, digital becomes physical, and precision begins to meet the unpredictability of the material.

Meet the founder and designer

I have always been drawn to creating things, exploring materials and techniques, and finding solutions to technical challenges.

As a child, I took radios apart and put them back together, and spent as much time as possible making useful, aesthetic and occasionally rather pointless inventions. I enjoyed altering existing objects, testing ideas and discovering how things responded.

That curiosity eventually led me to industrial product design and a fascination with digital fabrication. I love the precision of 3D design and contemporary production methods, and the way they can result in clever constructions where every part fits together exactly as intended.

At the same time, precision and efficiency alone can sometimes feel hollow. I value craftsmanship for the human judgement, variation, imagination and unpredictability it brings to an object.

Through benleito.studio, I explore how these two worlds can strengthen one another by combining contemporary production methods with hands-on craft.

I want to create objects that evoke a response: pieces that spark curiosity at first sight and continue to reveal more through use and closer observation.

I’m looking forward to sharing the ideas, experiments and objects that will shape benleito.studio over time.

The first object by benleito.studio.

Inspired by Amsterdammertjes found throughout Amsterdam, this piece is a quiet tribute to a city that stays with you.

Its familiar proportions were carefully translated into a smaller object, combining slip-cast ceramic, cast concrete and a discreet 3D-printed base.

Designed and produced in small quantities in Amsterdam.

benleito.studio is an independent design and maker studio based in Amsterdam, founded by product designer Ben Leito.

The studio explores the intersection of digital design, digital fabrication and hands-on craftsmanship, creating thoughtful objects shaped through experimentation, precision and an appreciation for materials.

The first object is currently being developed and produced in small quantities in Amsterdam.
