Almost 4 years ago I made my journey out to Arizona for college, not knowing a single soul. I cannot believe my 4 years of college are slowly coming to an end. The past 4 years have been so crazy, beautiful, fun , scary and rewarding all at the same time. To the people I’ve met, places I’ve gone, things I’ve seen and done I couldn’t ask for anything more. Tucson will always have such a special place in my heart. I am so proud of myself because I wasn’t even sure these days would come. I’m not really sure how to even go about sharing this, but lately I’ve felt like I need to. Not because I want sympathy, but because I want to bring more awareness to something that so many people live with every single day.

3 months after graduating college in Arizona, I was in the process of becoming a Special Agent with the ATF — the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
It was a dream come true. It was something I had worked toward throughout college and something I truly believed was the beginning of the life I had planned for myself. And then, just a few months later, everything changed.

At 22 years old, I was diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses and autoimmune conditions, including fibromyalgia, along with other conditions I never imagined I would have to understand at that age. Now, I’m four months away from turning 26, and these illnesses have changed what a “normal” life looks like for me in ways most people would never know just by looking at me.

I may seem like I’m thriving — but doesn’t everyone from the outside?

There are days when my body hurts so badly that getting out of bed feels impossible. I used to LOVE driving and would drive everywhere without thinking twice. Now, something as simple as sitting behind the wheel can cause muscle and nerve pain throughout my legs and body.

Over the years, my symptoms have only become more complicated. There are still so many things happening inside my body that doctors don’t fully understand. Some things don’t even have a proper name or diagnosis yet. Sometimes it feels like I have conditions identified only by numbers and letters — almost like the way NASA labels the millions of stars it discovers. And that uncertainty is one of the hardest parts.

I’m still ambitious. I’m still building a life I’m proud of, with dreams and goals I fully intend to chase. My life just looks different than the one I imagined at 22.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that someone can be incredibly strong while still struggling.

So please, give people a little extra grace. You may have no idea how hard their body is fighting just to get through an ordinary day. 🤍
