Last night, the lights on Broadway
were dimmed in honor of my dear friend and teacher, Sondra Lee.
Sondra was a force of nature.
Her influence reached far and wide - through stage, dance, art, and cinema.

From her early days on the Broadway scene, to her work with Jerome Robbins and Stella Adler, to her collaborations with Federico Fellini, Marlon Brando, and Michael Mann, Sondra stood at the crossroads of some of the most significant moments in art and culture of the past seven decades.

Our friendship meant the world to me.
She changed me at my creative core, shaping who I am as both an artist and an actor.

Sondra and I shared a small tradition that began in the mid-2000s.
We kept a pile of books we’d selected,
on her bookshelf in the ‘ Blue Room’.

Whenever we met, we would read aloud to one another, sitting in her sunlit apartment high above the city.
The stack included works by James Baldwin, Frank O'Hara,
Ocean Vuong, Kenneth Koch, Denise Levertov, and John Ashbery.

It was a sacred little ritual, a sharing of words and ideas.
A creative and spiritual exchange that
I will always carry with me.
Sondra is a part of all that I do and her friendship will forever be one of the great gifts of my life.
