My friend Alley @alleyhasbeentaken hosted a wine tasting last night, and among a lineup of excellent bottles, one pairing stood out above all: the 2016 Domaine Christophe Billon Côte-Rôtie La Brocarde and the 2016 Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2. Two wines from different regions offering two distinct interpretations of Northern Rhône-inspired Syrah. Each was compelling in its own way, but tasting them side by side was a truly nostalgic experience. It took me back to the beginning of my wine journey, when my fascination with Syrah and Shiraz from around the world first began.

Side by side, the 2016 Domaine Christophe Billon Côte-Rôtie La Brocarde and the 2016 Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 offered a fascinating dialogue between two regions united by a common grape. Billon’s Côte-Rôtie is unmistakably Northern Rhône in character: savoury, mineral and iron-laced, with layers of blackberry, violet, olive tapenade, smoked bacon and spice unfolding over a finely structured frame. The schist-rich slopes of Côte Brune lend a distinctive ferrous edge and stony precision, while the wine’s purity and restraint reflect Christophe Billon’s traditional approach. Entering its prime drinking window, it balances power and freshness with remarkable poise.

In contrast, Yarra Yering’s Dry Red No. 2 presents a more perfumed and silken interpretation of the Syrah tradition. Built around Shiraz and complemented by small portions of Viognier and Marsanne, it opens with lifted aromas of violet, rose petal, raspberry and white pepper before revealing layers of red plum, olive, thyme and subtle spice. The cool-climate conditions of the Yarra Valley bring brightness, elegance and precision, while the seamless texture and restrained style underline why this wine remains one of Australia’s benchmarks for Rhône-inspired blends.

2022 En Billat is a featherweight, intensely expressive Pinot Noir marrying Jura salinity with Côte de Nuits perfume. Its pale ruby core and typical Jura transparency captivate instantly. Seductive strawberry and wild raspberry aromas leap from the glass, followed by rose petal, hawthorn, peppercorn, and blood orange zest, all grounded by subtle forest floor and chalk dust. A weightless, juicy red-berry attack reveals a fine lattice of savory tannins. Mouth-watering acidity draws out red currant, pomegranate, a saline edge, white pepper, and dried thyme, culminating in a beautifully long, iron-tinged mineral finish.

Perched in Rotalier, Domaine Anne & Jean-François Ganevat channels 14 generations of farming into biodynamic mastery: horse-plowed rows, massal-selected vines, native yeasts, and minimal sulfur. Their most gossamer red springs from En Billat, a 1.1-hectare slope (340–380m) where morning sun and afternoon shade lock in freshness. Just 30cm of pale marl covers fossil-littered Bajocian limestone, forcing old-vine Pinot Noir (planted 1976–1985) to dig deep for its haunting perfume. Hand-picked, 70% whole clusters underwent a ten-day infusion, aging twelve months in neutral demi-muids and six in raw sandstone amphorae before gravity-bottling with a mere 18 mg/L SO₂.

Warm lighting, tasteful modern decor, and comfortable seating create a cozy yet upscale atmosphere. The menu leans beautifully into Mediterranean and modern European influences, with every dish impeccably prepared and presented. A truly fantastic evening and a culinary experience we will long savor.

Krug Grande Cuvée 171ᵉ Édition – Released in 2023 and built around the sun-drenched 2015 harvest, it is a remarkable blend of 131 wines from 12 different vintages, spanning 2000 to 2015. An impressive 42% comes from Krug’s extensive reserve wine library, bringing depth and balance to a warm year characterized by intense summer heat and welcome late-August rains. The final blend is led by Pinot Noir (45%), complemented by Chardonnay (37%) and Meunier (18%), with fruit sourced from legendary parcels across the region to ensure the House's signature harmony.

In the glass, it glows with a rich, pale golden hue. The bouquet is luxurious and inviting. Notes of blooming white flowers, citrus zest, and marzipan lead the way, followed by delicate aromas of warm brioche, roasted coffee, and a hint of smoke. On the palate, the wine is generous and expressive, reflecting the ripe energy of the 2015 vintage, before unfolding into a broad, creamy texture layered with baked apple, plum, almond paste, and honey. A fine chalky minerality and the subtle grip of Pinot Noir provide beautiful structure, while the finish lingers effortlessly, revealing waves of salted caramel, grapefruit, and toasted nuts long after each sip.

Rich yet precise, powerful yet elegant, Grande Cuvée 171ᵉ Édition beautifully combines the youthful, radiant vitality of its base year with the depth and refinement of mature reserve wines. It is captivating today, bursting with detail and character, but it also possesses the balance and structure to evolve gracefully for many years to come.

At the table, few pairings are as satisfying as Korean BBQ. The Champagne’s bright acidity cuts cleanly through the richness of pork belly and marinated beef, refreshing the palate with every sip. At the same time, its nutty, toasty complexity echoes the smoky, caramelized edges of the grilled meat, creating a pairing that feels both effortless and unforgettable.

Historic season for CIS DB at Stanley! Even after being crashed into in both the semis and finals, our Men’s boat finished 5th in the Silver Cup, and our Mixed Open boat came 4th in the Gold Cup — just 0.08 seconds off 3rd place 🏆
It’s our best Gold Cup finish in 7 years, and we couldn’t be prouder of this team for showing true resilience through every challenge. We’ll be coming for that Gold Cup next season!
