Let us leave a splendid legacy for our children...let us turn to them and say, this you inherit: guard it well, for it is far more precious than money...and once destroyed, Nature's beauty cannot be repurchased at any price.

It is the first day of October. Summer birds are gone. Frosts have signaled for winter. All tender vegetables are harvested from the garden. Marigolds and zinnias and a few other rugged things still retain the glow of warm weather, yet autumn chill is in the air, new colors are on the hills, dead leaves begin to cover the grass.

In the sky not a cloud, not a speck; a vast dome of blue ether lightly suspended above the world. The woods are heaped with color like a painter's palette,—great splashes of red and orange and gold. - John Burroughs, On an October landscape

We heard the sigh of the first autumnal wind, and even the water had acquired a grayer hue. The sumach, grape, and maple were already changed, and the milkweed had turned to a deep rich yellow. In all woods the leaves were fast ripening for their fall.

Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.

The time of the falling of leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days!

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

What a treat to see this garden and landscape we designed thriving and being enjoyed after a number of seasons.

Thank you @katierosenfeld for giving a peek back into the magic of time.

Go see Katie’s photos of the rest of this beautiful, flower filled home.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work, and that when no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey.
