Announcing ‘Sunbeam of No Illusion,’ a new collection of Fender Rhodes impressions from the duo of Ben Seretan & John Thayer 🌄 The album dawns digitally and on LP March 27th - today we share first taste Watermelon Well, a serene and juicy slice 🍉 Listen & purchase today ~ link in bio Sunbeam of No Illusion is Thayer and Seretan’s first official collaboration on record, though they’ve performed together in a wide variety of contexts since 2023. Drawing on the resplendent natural world of their shared home of upstate New York, the pair calls forth the specters of the valley, spinning up an offering that’s frequently sublime and often a little sorrowful.  Imperfections, signal noise, ground buzz, blips, plonks, glitches, and stutters accrete over clumsy, delicate loops of Fender Rhodes piano, accumulating into something that evocatively emulates the sparkling white noise of water or the calm swell of a breeze.  Sunbeam is a fine slice of hyperreality, a nuanced, BGM-inflected postmodern pastoral that’s a heady blend of Yoshimura, Fennesz, Badalamenti, and Harold Budd. The poet Richard Brautigan dreamed of a cybernetic forest, computers in the trees - here the wind is digital, trees rustling in binary. At peace with change and permeability, the metal resonance and electrical impulses of the Rhodes hum in the field of the studio as the Earth orbits the sun, an imperfect looping. Announcing “𝙰𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚕 𝙿𝚛𝚘𝚓𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗𝚝𝚘 𝙵𝚕𝚊𝚟𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚘𝚠𝚗,” a compilation of atmospheric “nice sounding” tracks of many tastes from @benseretan’s weekly My Big Break project, an ambitious effort to send out new music and writing every Thursday. The first single “they wanna hear another heater” - a lovely, off-the-cuff recording of piano with an ebow laid on the strings - is streaming now. SUNBEAM OF NO ILLUSION is an album of fender rhodes transformations, it’s a particular contemplative pastoral river valley mood, and for each track there is a corresponding video work built on refractions, reflections, layers, and feedback - the LCDs of a screen folding in on themselves. Thayer & Seretan will be performing this music in a bath of these videos at @thelocalsaugerties next week on Wednesday, August 12. hey hey - sharing some excellent professional news I just recently came onboard full time at @theeggpac in Albany as the Artistic Programming Manager, a new position there focused on booking Egg Presents shows and generally helping to oversee programming For those of you unfamiliar with the Egg, it is a world class, historic performing arts center held in that wild concrete ovoid you see in the picture - it’s located right in downtown Albany in the middle of the sprawling and uniquely brutalist Empire State Plaza Come see a show! Or better yet let’s link and organize something sick there together 🥚 I also want to briefly acknowledge the long journey of freelancing I have been on since the end of 2024 - big tough! But I got some w9s in with some of the finest people in the world and I am so thankful I was able to string it together.
