One of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had was with my grandfather, Pops. Growing up, he wasn’t the type to express his emotions openly, especially with words like “I love you.” He never grew up hearing those words, that’s just how his family was. He showed his care in other ways, like studying up on every college I visited, showing up for every game he could, or reaching out through text/call if we hadn’t talked in a while. I knew he loved me, but it was unspoken. One day, I remember talking to him about his family. Instead of our usual small talk, I asked him more personal questions about his childhood and his life growing up. At the end of the day, as I was about to leave, I hugged him tightly and said, “I love you, Pops.” To my surprise, he said it back. For Pops, I think it was an unspoken barrier between us that had finally broken down. In my opinion, it also gave him peace. He didn’t have to carry the weight of not saying those words anymore. That experience taught me that love comes in many forms and that sometimes, all it takes is one moment to change a relationship forever. I don’t think I’ll ever have the correct words to sum up my pops, he didn’t have a selfish bone in his body, if he could make it to something he’d be there, and if he couldn’t, he’d still be there. Often in times like these it’s easy to think about the bad things but I think God has his own way of showing us the good things we have in life. Don’t be upset he’s gone, be glad we had him.
