Surreal to see @massiveattackofficial live at the Citadel in Berlin, having admired them for the greater part of my life. Even more surreal to be surrounded by a crowd of racist bigots who heckled, complained and stood unaffected in protest to the "political concerts that they are tired of", for they shatter their illusion of civilized society. Did they know what concert they were attending, or was this just a Sunday activity for the old and privileged dimwit citizens of the 'Western World'? Although I struggled to find sparks of solidarity in this truly terrifying display of human apathy, it felt like somehow this was the perfect crowd to receive this heartwrenching rendition of Massive Attack's catalogue and tributes, that they may perhaps reflect, if not today, then one day, by some function of dementia that might loosen the grip fascism has on their minds. I share these images here for those who would have welcomed a call to humanity with joy rather than despicable arrogance. Thank you to the band and their guests (Elisabeth Fraser, Shara Nelson, Horace Andy!!!) and the son of Marwan Barghouthi, @aarabbarghouthi, who stood on that stage and carried the torch of his father's struggle, at least symbolically in front of this undeserving crowd. And of course the opening band, @47soul, all the way from Palestine. In this moment of bittersweet apprehension of our human condition, I feel proud of my people who are standing strong against the fascism that is enchroaching us presently, and doing so with the passion it demands.🦩 Freedom to all oppressed peoples. by @beraur
