Turkestan Ground Jay - Podoces panderi
Uzbekistan - 2026
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

A true gem of Central Asia, an endemic species, and an absolute charmer! There’s only one downside: to find them, you have to head straight into the desert, and not just any desert, but specifically into the saxaul thickets. If you know the right spots, finding them is a breeze. The only catch is... you actually need to know those spots! In cases like this, I dive deep into resources like iNaturalist, eBird, and other local birder websites. Often, it’s exactly on those local platforms that you can uncover real treasures.

Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Hey everyone! I know I’ve been MIA for a little while, but that’s because I’ve been busy working on some new shots! You’ll see it all very soon, but for now, here’s a bulbul from my previous trip to the Himalayas.

Gray-winged Blackbird - Turdus boulboul
India, Uttarakhand, Sattal - 2026
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Hey everyone, I know I’ve been MIA, but I’ve just been out in the field cooking up some new content! In the meantime, here’s a Grey-winged Blackbird. It’s pretty much a twin to the European Blackbird, but, as always, with that unforgettable Himalayan twist.

Black-throated Bushtit - Aegithalos concinnus.
India, Uttarakhand, Munsyari - 2026
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Lively and vibrant—almost like their northern relatives, the long-tailed tits—they’re the absolute jewels of the Himalayan forest belt. They’re a bit less keen on visiting hides, but you’ll have zero trouble spotting them during quick forays into the nearby bushes. Just like many other passerines, they’re super tuned in to the calls of raptors and owls, so mobbing is the ultimate trick! Just be mindful of the season, and don’t play the calls for too long—you don’t want to unnecessarily stress the birds out and make them waste their energy on you.

Chestnut-bellied - Nuthatch Sitta cinnamoventris
India, Uttarakhand, Munsyari - 2026
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Just like other nuthatches, this one is an absolute ball of energy—lively, feisty, and occasionally a bit of a drama queen at the hides in the Himalayan foothills. Bright and strikingly contrasting, it’s a spectacular subject to shoot. And of course, where would we be without the classic upside-down nuthatch poses!

An absolute legend at any bird hide. Restless and clever, not exactly colorful, but somehow still so vibrant. Meet the Himalayan Treepie!

Green-backed Tit - Parus monticolus
India, Uttarakhand, Sattal - 2026
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Great Tit? Nope! I absolutely love species doppelgängers. They’re a perfect, living illustration of evolutionary processes that you can actually witness with your own eyes. Many species diverged millions of years ago due to population isolation, or conversely, ended up looking identical thanks to convergent evolution. It’s always so fascinating, and it really shows how these exact same processes are still playing out right in front of us today.

Golden Bush-Robin - Tarsiger chrysaeus
India, Uttarakhand, Munsyari - 2026
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Just take a look at this shot! Having lived in the North for a long time, I’m used to female birds being gray and pretty unassuming. Against that backdrop, a female Golden Bush-Robin like this could totally be the local superstar back in my Northern homeland! Agile and quick, these birds loves hanging out in scrubby bushes across croplands, the outskirts of villages, and even just along the roadsides.

Himalayan Bulbul - Pycnonotus leucogenys
India, Uttarakhand, Sattal - 2026.
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

More bulbuls for the bulbul god! Naturally, if a bird exists anywhere on Earth, the Himalayas will have its own version with a "Himalayan" tag. And bulbuls are no exception.
The Himalayas are a truly unique place where even the slopes of the same mountain can look completely different - one might be covered in pine forests, while the other is a full-on jungle with vine-draped trees. This incredible diversity is exactly what explains the massive variety of species in this region.
And the bulbul? Oh, you’ll find it absolutely everywhere. It will definitely show up at your hide. The only catch you actually have to make it to the Himalayas first!

Great Barbet - Psilopogon virens
India, Uttarakhand, Sattal - 2026.
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Bright, colorful, and pretty cheeky birds that chase everyone else away at the hides. But that’s exactly what makes them absolutely one-of-a-kind and such a thrill to shoot!

Desert Finch - Rhodospiza obsoleta
Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan, Usturt Plateau - 2025
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

A classic resident of Central Asian deserts and semi-deserts. Just like most finches, they love darting around in flocks among the sparse shrubs of desert mountain valleys. They’ll let you get pretty close, and the only real challenge in shooting them is beating the heat and mirages. You just have to get to the spot early enough to snag a sharp, clear shot without any heat distortion!

Black Bulbul - Hypsipetes leucocephalus
India, Uttarakhand, Sattal - 2026.
Sony a7RV + Sony FE 200-600

Here’s another member of the family, and a frequent visitor to the hides, too! They’re quite common in Asia’s deciduous forests—noisy, energetic, and always on the move. But seeing them hanging out among the Himalayan pines is a wonderfully unusual sight!
