your move
January 16, 2027 | Basement @basement_cph

A reinterpretation of John Cage’s Reunion, a work for chessboard and live electronics in which a game of chess determines the live mix of six electronic performances.

Coloratura soprano and OperaHole co-artistic director Litha Ashforth has remade the chessboard, inviting audience members to become co-creators of the soundscape.

Come and go as you please. Have a drink, chat with friends, or play a game of chess. Reentry is permitted, the bar is open, and seating is a mix of standing and seated.

Stay for five minutes or the whole performance. Your move.

February 27, 2027 | Dansekapellet @dansekapellet

Enough with standing ovation inflation.

Hosted by Faroese “multi-talent” Hávard Magnussen (Politiken), this cabaret-style concert invites audiences to rediscover the lost arts of booing and tomato throwing.

Our guinea pigs? Award-winning cellist Jonathan Swensen, The LuLu Quartet, French hornist Simon Nostrand Berg, and more.

They’ll perform demanding virtuoso works. But if they fail to hold your attention, they risk being booed offstage—or slimed, Nickelodeon-style.

Classical music has never been so unforgiving.

Feeling slimey? Click around our new site for tickets and more info

usually i get kicked off the bus for singing… now i get critical acclaim for it 😍🚌🤷🏻‍♂️

“The format offers a kind of site-specificity, if you like, where the landscape along the bus route, with its rest stops, scenic meadows and cemeteries, can become part of your personal experience of the work… you become something of a voyeur, sharing in a love that is destined to end in death”

@svenskadagbladet @lorettovil

Violetta tar bussen tours Sweden through December…

📸: Julia Mård

Meet Daniel 🎤

Daniel is a new face at the festival this year, though not exactly a stranger. He has been part of the “Friends” side of Festival & Friends for a while now. 🥰

Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Daniel is a character tenor based right here in Copenhagen. 🌵

He has performed with Malmö Opera and worked on projects with Santa Fe Opera. He holds degrees from New England Conservatory in Boston and Mannes Conservatory in New York, and recently co-founded Operahole, an experimental music production cooperative whose latest show had a critic writing that he “sang every ounce of safety out of the audience’s heads.” We’re still thinking about that one. 🥹

This fall he makes his solo operatic Scandinavian debut as Alfredo in Violetta Tar Bussen, a collaboration between Riksteatern and Sad Boy Productions. And for this summer you’ll experience him in what is probably the most theatrical thing we’ve ever put on stage: Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King. A king slowly unraveling into madness, across eight songs, with nowhere to hide. We have seen Daniel perform this, and we promise you that he will blow you away. 🖤👑 by @berg.berg.rosenberg
