Topic: Gravitational Waves and Globular Clusters

Globular clusters host robust populations of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, creating unique environments where dynamical interactions drive the formation of a wide range of astrophysical sources. In recent years, these systems have emerged as key sites for the assembly of merging black hole binaries, connecting directly to the gravitational-wave sources observed by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA network.

In this talk, Professor Kremer will synthesize recent advances in our understanding of compact object populations in globular clusters and the dynamical processes that govern their evolution. As well as highlighting how these processes shape the formation of gravitational-wave sources and connect to a broader landscape of cluster-driven phenomena, including black hole–star binaries, radio pulsars, and fast radio bursts.

As the new field of multi-messenger astronomy continues to expand, globular clusters are emerging as powerful laboratories for compact object astrophysics, providing a unified framework for interpreting both gravitational-wave and electromagnetic transients.

The UC Berkeley Astronomy Department presents the 2026 Annual Distinguished Lecture in Astronomy: "The Universe in Us" with Professor Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz .
Where did the building blocks of life come from? The answer lies in the hearts of distant stars and incredibly powerful explosions such as supernovae, which help spread fundamental elements to galaxies far and wide, where they can spark new life. The talk explores how hundreds of millions of celestial events have forged the elements that make up the Solar System, Earth, and us.

About the speaker: Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz was born in Mexico, studied physics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and pursued his PhD at Cambridge University. He was the John Bahcall Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton before joining the faculty at UC Santa Cruz, where he is a professor of astrophysics and astronomy and holds the Vera Rubin Presidential Chair.

Uranus has weird rings. Astronomers now know the source of two of them.

The rings around Uranus have mystified astronomers for almost half a century. Now, thanks to a combination of ground-and space-based telescopic observations, scientists think they’ve worked out where two of these rings came from.
