Fun fact: Our Civil Engineering + Business majors are incredible.🐻 🏗️

Slightly more fun fact: Even after a couple of years of Patrick being Martin’s “big,” hours of shared recruiting prep, and countless hangs — Martin always greets Patrick with a firm handshake. 🤝

Our advice to those searching for roles right now… practice your handshake. Martin’s got his on lock. 🔒

🏆✈️ Innovation takes flight at UC Berkeley CEE! 💙💛

Congratulations to Alexis Eskenazi and Dr. Jasenka Rakas on earning second place in the 2025–2026 ACRP University Design Competition!

Under the mentorship of Dr. Rakas, Alexis, an undergraduate student in CE 157/257: Sustainable Aviation and Infrastructure, developed an innovative proposal exploring how small modular nuclear reactors, hydrogen production, and sustainable aviation fuel could transform energy systems at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

The award-winning project addresses some of aviation’s most pressing challenges, from decarbonization and energy resilience to advancing clean energy technologies.

👏 We are incredibly proud of Alexis’s achievement and Dr. Rakas’s outstanding mentorship, reflecting the creativity, leadership, and commitment to sustainable infrastructure that define the UC Berkeley Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Congratulations to both on this remarkable recognition! 🐻

At Berkeley Civil and Environmental Engineering, innovation is a team effort. By bringing together diverse perspectives, building meaningful relationships, and working across disciplines, we’re tackling complex challenges and reimagining what’s possible for our communities and our planet.

The future of our built and natural environments depends on more than great ideas. It takes people who listen, collaborate, and work together to turn those ideas into impact.

Because building a better future starts with building it together.

🚣‍♀️ This year, UC Berkeley’s Cal Concrete Canoe team took Botanical to the 2026 ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition at the Civil Engineering Student Championships in Fairmont, West Virginia. After placing 1st at the Mid-Pacific regional competition, the team advanced to the national championships, competing against 25 other regional finalists from across the U.S. and internationally.

At Nationals, Berkeley finished 8th overall, with strong performances on the water, including 4th in the men’s slalom, 3rd in the men’s sprint and 7th in the co-ed sprint. Botanical, weighing just 176 pounds and inspired by the resilience of California’s native ecosystems, represented months of design, materials testing, construction and teamwork.

The Concrete Canoe Competition has a long history. While student concrete canoe races date back to the 1960s, ASCE’s first official society-wide competition was held in 1988. Today, the competition brings together structural and materials engineering, hydrodynamics, project management, technical communication and racing.

At UC Berkeley, the team puts the principles of the College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) into practice, giving students the opportunity to move from engineering concepts to a full-scale, floating structure. From concrete mix design and structural analysis to construction and sustainability, Concrete Canoe offers hands-on experience that complements the classroom and develops leadership and teamwork skills.

Congratulations to the Cal Concrete Canoe team on another trip to Nationals and a strong 2026 season!!

Can “digital twins” help California manage its growing flood risk? 🌊🌿

UC Berkeley researchers are developing a first-of-its-kind digital twin of the Lower Pajaro River Valley to help communities visualize flooding and better understand how infrastructure, climate change, ecology, and equity intersect.

Led by Anna Serra-Llobet and Civil Engineering Associate Professor Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos, the Pajaro Hydro-Twin project brings together Berkeley researchers, including PhD candidate Gabriela Paredes and Distinguished Professor Kenichi Soga, to turn advanced digital modeling into a tool for real-world climate resilience.

🛴 From city streets to Wall Street

Lime has officially entered the public market, marking a new chapter for the shared scooter company and the broader world of scooters and e-bikes.

Berkeley CEE Professor Susan Shaheen, co-director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center, spoke with the San Francisco Standard about how shared scooters have evolved from a disruptive new technology into an increasingly established part of how people move through cities.

As the industry grows, Shaheen points to the importance of financial sustainability, thoughtful regulation, and continued investment in operations and infrastructure.

What’s next for scooters and e-bikes? Professor Shaheen weighs in.

Nearly 700 attendees and one incredible night welcoming the newest members of the CEE community! 💙🎉

Our annual CEE Welcome Gala brought together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the department for an evening of celebration, connection, and Berkeley spirit.

A very special thank you to @ashrafhabibullah (M.S. ’70), Founder, President and CEO of Computers and Structures, Inc. (CSI), whose incredible generosity makes this tradition possible.

Since 1975, CSI has been at the forefront of structural and earthquake engineering software, developing tools such as ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, and CSiBridge that are used by engineers around the world. Ashraf’s impact extends far beyond technology. His continued commitment to Berkeley CEE and the next generation of engineers helps create experiences like this one, bringing hundreds of people together and strengthening the community our students become part of from day one.
And, of course, no CEE Gala would be complete without some CSI merch! ✨

Thank you, Ashraf and CSI, for continuing to show up for our students and our community year after year.
