Tonight, the major Berlin-based electroacoustic ensemble Spydergum plays an album-release concert at Volksbühne. The album was recorded during a residency at Morphine-Raum and is an improvisational body of work that traverses musical genres, from neoclassical to pop and ambient to jazz. This coming weekend, studios and workshops in Neukölln are opening their doors as part of ‘Offene Ateliers Neukölln’ organised by WerkStadt. The current edition grew out of an initiative by the networking meetings of Neukölln’s arts and culture scene, this weekend event encompassing 36 different spaces. Our feature topic Performativity continues until the end October, considering the performative nature of socio-political norms that we take for granted, and how modes of performance in contemporary art can help to reveal them. Published as part of the feature, Jacob Zhang reviews ‘Projections Onto the East,’ the current group show at Schinkel Pavillon. Presenting works by the likes of Pavel Brăila, Hito Steyerl and Gabriele Stötzer, the exhibition explores how the dichotomy of “East” and “West” structures our present and how the dichotomy is performed. Also published as part of Performativity, Olivia Noss writes on the staged fictional dramas in Carrie Mae Weems’ photography in the exhibition ‘The Heart of the Matter’ at C/O Berlin which expands from the privacy of authentic and constructed family life to a public understanding of places and environments. Read more in Alison Hugill’s Letter from the Editor via the link in bio. Image 2: Carrie Mae Weems: 'Welcome Home,' 1978–84; from the series Family Pictures and Stories // © Carrie Mae Weems, courtesy the artist and Gladstone, New York, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, and Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin Image 3: Maria (Masha) Lisogorskaya: 'Beast from the East,' 2026, exhibition view 'Projections onto the East,' Schinkel Pavillon, 2026 // Courtesy the artist © Photo by n.b.k. / Jens Ziehe Image 4: Maya Schweizer, exhibition view 'Projections onto the East,' Schinkel Pavillon, 2026 // Courtesy the artist © Photo by n.b.k. / Jens Ziehe @ahugill @pashuzza @hitosteyerl @zhacobjang @schinkelpavillon @olivia.noss @carriemaeweems @coberlin @gladstone.gallery @fraenkelgallery @galerie_barbara_thumm @marialisogorskaya @neuerberlinerkunstverein @ziehejens @m_a_y_a_s_c_h_w_e_i_z_e_r #topic #feature #featuretopic #performativity #performance by @berlinartlink

Bharti Kher’s exhibition ‘Bones’ at MOCA in Toronto brings together 15 years of the artist’s work alongside new sculptures. Known for assemblage, Kher dismantles and reconfigures everyday objects, castings, architectural fragments and natural materials, using them to investigate how shapes influence systems of belief and perception. The exhibition’s title refers both to bodily remains and to foundations on which new structures can be built. Striking platforms, surreal female figures, geometric sculptures, ropes and chains create theatrical arrangements in this show. ‘Bones’ is on view through February 14, 2027. This exhibition features in our international exhibitions highlights list for October to December. Premiering this Thursday, ‘Losers’ by Enad Marouf combines text, dance and music to engage with history from the perspective of the oppressed and defeated. Bringing together Walter Benjamin’s ‘On the Concept of History’ (1940) with Arwa Salih’s ‘The Stillborn’ (1996), history is not approached as a straightforward narrative of progress, but Marouf rather turns attention to history’s failures, losses and its unrealized potential. On Friday, the three-night screening series ‘Horror Horror’ kicks off at KW, presenting short films by artists who explore the horror genre. Works by Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid, Olivia Erlanger and Diego Marcon make up the program, interested in how artists have used horror to confront what lies beneath the surface – disturbing, eerie, and often difficult to name. “The series hangs at life size in the center of the exhibition, emulating a hearth within the space that a kitchen itself provides. The kitchen table, traditionally associated with feminine domesticity, functions as a stage for domestic life more broadly.” Carrie Mae Weems’ career-defining images pushed photography into a new chapter in the 1990s and early 2000s, ushering in portraits by women, rooted in performance and self-definition. Her retrospective ‘The Heart of The Matter’ at C/O Berlin encourages viewers to question longstanding scripts about gender, race and history, particularly illustrating rich, wide ranging experiences of Black womanhood and Black life. As part of our feature topic Performativity, Olivia Noss writes on the exhibition, discussing the complexity of romantic love, how the artist’s body functions as a conduit and how Weems’ images poetically test the status quo. Read the full review at the link in bio. Image 1: Carrie Mae Weems: ‘Untitled (Woman and Daughter with Make Up),’ 1990; from the ‘Kitchen Table’ Series // © Carrie Mae Weems, courtesy of the artist and Gladstone, New York, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin Image 2+4: Carrie Mae Weems: ‘Untitled’; from the series ‘Preach,’ 2024 // © Carrie Mae Weems, courtesy of the artist and Gladstone, New York, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin Image 3: Carrie Mae Weems: ‘Untitled (Great Expectations),’ 2016; from the series ‘Scenes and Takes’ // © Carrie Mae Weems, courtesy of the artist and Gladstone, New York, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin @carriemaeweems @coberlin @olivia.noss @gladstone.gallery @fraenkelgallery @galerie_barbara_thumm #photography #womanhood #Blackwomanhood #Blacklife #performance by @berlinartlink
Marking the 40th anniversary of Musée d’Orsay, Paris, the exhibition ‘J’ai vu’ by Jenny Holzer opens today, drawing language from the museum’s archives to place historical voices into circulation throughout the building Texts selected from artists’ letters, literature and political commentary appear through projections across the museum’s Seine-facing façade, a site-specific LED installation, metallic redaction paintings and newly produced stone benches. Holzer’s sculptures also echo the varied stone of the museum’s original interiors. Moving across the building’s interior and exterior, the project presents history as an active, contested field whose political and emotional residues remain embedded in the present. This exhibition features in our international exhibitions highlights list for October to December. “Perhaps, in keeping with this spirit, the audience will have to remain on the lookout for “the East,” knowing that it will exist as long as “we” require it as a foil.” ‘Projections Onto the East’ is a group show presented by Schinkel Pavillon and n.b.k. which addresses the ideological attributions associated with the terms “East” and “West.” As part of our feature topic Performativity, Jacob Zhicheng Zhang writes on the exhibition and to what extent any performative “projections” remain in sight, discussing the artist’s wayward performing body in the GDR, processes of romanticization and myths of “the East.” Read the full review at the link in bio. Image 1: Exhibition view ‘Projections onto the East’ at Schinkel Pavillon, 2026 // Courtesy of the artist, ©️ n.b.k. / Jens Ziehe Image 2: Maria (Masha) Lisogorskaya: 'Beast from the East,' 2026, exhibition view ‘Projections onto the East’ at Schinkel Pavillon, 2026 // Courtesy of the artist, ©️ n.b.k. / Jens Ziehe Image 3: Gabriele Stötzer: 6/8 objects from the series ‘Everyday Objects,’ 1991; ‘Gabi with Everyday Objects'(photographed by Karin Rocholl), 1992; ‘Hands Intertwined,’ 1982, exhibition view ‘Projections onto the East’ at Schinkel Pavillon, 2026 // Courtesy the artist, LOOCK Galerie, Berlin, © Photo: n.b.k. / Jens Ziehe Image 4: Maya Schweizer: 'Suis son regard et observe (Follow Their Gaze and Observe),' 2026, exhibition view ‘Projections onto the East’ at Schinkel Pavillon, 2026 // Courtesy the artist © Photo: n.b.k. / Jens Ziehe @schinkelpavillon @neuerberlinerkunstverein @zhacobjang @ziehejens @marialisogorskaya @loockgalerie @m_a_y_a_s_c_h_w_e_i_z_e_r #performativity #gdr #theeast #eastwest #romanticization by @berlinartlink
