BERLINDE DEMAN

Known for her work across jazz, theatre, and classical music contexts, Berlinde Deman is a tuba player and sound sculptor who is a part of the Flat Earth Society Orchestra. Cinematic and sombre, Deman's output is moving and unique, thanks in part to the incredible timbres of her instrument of choice: she uses a sixteenth-century instrument called the serpent, a distant, mysterious predecessor of the tuba which was developed in the Renaissance era. Through the use of layering and looping, she constructs an ever-expanding sound of subtle melodic growth and swarming harmonic dissonance. Her debut album Plank 9 (2025) is a work of pure creativity and exploration, combining minimal insectoid murmurs with elysian ambient horn-song. Somehow, the tones this ancient instrument create have an ethereal, teleportational effect, dragging listeners into a different world of perception: one of wandering alone in nature, of feeling the creaks in one's bones, or of sensing the unsettling calm before a storm.

Serpent player Berlinde Deman joins Het Concreet's studio at NS16 this autumn. Het Concreet's residency programme aims to create a shared space to explore, to let a process unfold rather than execute it, and to find new angles on existing artistic practice. Together with composer Mathijs Leeuwis and Anneroos Goosen, Deman sets out to explore where the centuries-old sound of the serpent meets tape and electronics. Goosen brings her ongoing research into the materiality and sound of raw materials such as magnetite, adding a third voice to the conversation between breath, brass and tape.

Murf invited Spa for Spirits — a wellness centre inhabited by otherworldly creatures — into this shared field of experimentation. Performer Lili Sels VanBavaerts and fashion designer Kito Kotsoane approach Het Concreet’s and Berlinde’s creations and materials as active collaborators: tactile antennas and extensions of the body. Moving between the familiar and the alien, past and present, analogue and digital, they explore and celebrate both composition and decomposition through performative gestures — dissecting, destroying, transforming and recomposing their way through. A temporary ecosystem emerges: an open-ended, ever-morphing creature, always hungry for more.

Come visit it at several moments during the Murf/Murw Festival in NS16’s exhibition space! by @berlindedem

Op het menu: Syeeda's Song Flute, Giant Steps, Big Nick, Harmonique Exotique, Retiro Mitre, Lucie Und Ihre Goldy, Groove along - The Slowtrane, Little Melonaise, OHM, Vigilations, At The Spacebar, Cosmic Relief, Mr JC, Ansae 024

Nieuw!

Such a dear memory, finding this picture of Klangfenster (10-14-25), where Jorge Espinal and myself were invited, both playing a solo set and a duo impro as conclusion.
Invited by the wonderful Shabnam Parvaresh.
This all took place in Hase29 (Osnabrück) in a special setting of an art gallery.
The silence of the audience was touching. And we played our hearts out. That's for sure.

Thankyou for this nice memory everyone involved!
