The berlin modern will be Berlin’s newest museum right between the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Berlin Philharmonie.

On the occasion of Berlin Art Week, the museum opened its construction site to the public to show works by Gordon Matta-Clark:

”Matta-Clark (1943-1978) was an US-American conceptual artist and architect best known for his radical „building cuts“ and his social practice. He physically cut into buildings slated for demolition, carving geometric forms into them and deconstructing them.
Through this large-scale architectural interventions, he directly engaged with the urban environment and the communities
within it. His works critically addressed the social and economic transformations of the city, including demolition, speculation, and gentrification.
Working across architecture, sculpture, conceptual art and social practice, as well as performance, his singular artistic approach made him one of the most innovative and influential artists of his generation. His work fundamentally transtormed perceptions of art in the 20th century.“

For Berlin Art Week, @berlinmodern opens its doors again – and, for the first time, a temporary exhibition takes place inside the museum under construction. 🏗️

From the 10th through 13th September, five groundbreaking works by Gordon Matta-Clark are presented in dialogue with the museum’s architecture. Known for his radical “building cuts”, Matta-Clark transformed buildings by cutting directly into their structures, challenging the boundaries between architecture, sculpture and urban space.

Come and experience his work in a space that is still taking shape – creating an unique encounter between art and architecture.

The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz and its museums mourn the passing of Egidio Marzona.

On 15 March 2026, Italian art collector and patron Egidio Marzona (born 1944 in Bielefeld) passed away in Berlin, surrounded by his family and friends.

Over more than 50 years, Egidio Marzona assembled one of the most extensive collections of 20th-century art ever compiled – housed today at the @archivderavantgarden.skd in Dresden and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin.

Marion Ackermann, President of the SPK and former Director General of the @skd.museum, says:

“Egidio Marzona devoted his life to art. He was a passionate and tireless collector of the 20th-century avant-gardes, seeking to capture the artistic and intellectual movements of an entire century. His collection is not limited to artworks alone — it extends to traces of the entire process of artistic creation. Both Berlin and Dresden owe him a great deal, as he gradually entrusted his collections to the respective institutions, where they act like a battery, continually enabling new narratives and contexts.”

Between 2002 and 2014, the SPK acquired his collection of more than 600 artworks and 40,000 archival items spanning Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, and Arte Povera – partly through purchase, partly as a gift. The works are currently held at the @hamburger_bahnhof, the @neuenationalgalerie, the @kupferstichkabinett, and the @kunstbibliothek in Berlin, and will in future form part of the @berlinmodern, currently under construction.

In 2025, Egidio Marzona donated 22 rare artist-designed books of Conceptual Art from the 1960s to the SPK’s Kunstbibliothek – a final, generous act of a lifetime dedicated to preserving and sharing art.

He will be deeply missed.

Following the topping-out celebration at @berlinmodern, the construction site opened its doors to the public for the weekend. Visitors were invited to walk through the site, learn about the project, and get a first glimpse of works that will be installed in the museum’s galleries. The two-day event was accompanied by performances of Joan Jonas’s Mirror Piece I & II.
