"Backpack" won the annual Fat Bear Competition in Katmai this year.

Here is Backpack and Tatonka playing in Naknek Lake in 2014. Not sure which is which. But Backpack would have been about 8 years old in this photo. taken in Brooks Camp, Alaska by @bernabephoto

LIVE WEBINAR with Richard Bernabe 💻

When you're out in the field with a wildlife subject, the initial instinct is almost always to grab the longest lens in your bag and zoom in tight. But the most powerful images often tell a much larger story.

Join Muench Workshops Pro Richard Bernabe for an engaging webinar that explores how to push past the classic close-up portrait and create photos with lasting emotional impact.

“What Happens When A Displaced Wild Horse Is Finally Free But Doesn’t Know It Yet?”

And what does it take for that animal to believe it is finally safe?

Those are the questions that emerged from my conversation with Richard Bernabe (@bernabephoto) on the latest episode of his Beyond the Lens podcast — a wide-ranging discussion that goes beyond photography into trauma, recovery, advocacy, and the responsibilities of witnessing another species’ story.

At the heart of that discussion is Adonis, a horse rescued by @skydogsanctuary from an abusive situation. The photographs don’t simply document his rescue. They follow what comes afterward: the slow transition from fear and hypervigilance toward trust and recovery, when they finally feel home free.

Because physical safety does not necessarily produce psychological freedom.

That led to a fascinating discussion about roundups, Wild Unfree, and the psychology of captivity - including what we know from the recorded experiences of prisoners of war about the psychological consequences of prolonged confinement.

Removing physical confinement does not necessarily mean the mind understands that it is free.

We talked about my own evolution from artist to advocate and steward of the story - and the idea that the photograph can be the opening move, rather than the end of the advocacy contribution.

And we looked at the wider ecosystem surrounding America’s wild horses, from on-range stewardship to the enormous capacity challenges facing a sanctuary network trying to provide displaced animals with a safe place to begin the process of recovery.

Ultimately, this episode isn’t about how to photograph a wild horse. It’s about what happens when we remove an animal’s freedom - and what it takes to help them feel safe enough to believe they have it back.
