At its best, artistry, nature, and design don't just work together — they create a distinct spirit of a place that transcends the parameters of the space itself.

On Haven (the Mead Quin blog), Gold Collective member @meadquin joined celebrated landscape designer @bernardtrainor at his home and garden in Carmel. For thirty years, Bernard has carefully nurtured a practice built upon observing and listening to the land, tapping into its essence to connect to the spirit of place that makes each site unique.

"My passion lies at the intersection of my art, my garden, and my landscape practice. When I was younger, I didn’t know that I could design gardens, make art, collect ceramics, and change systems. But when you feel a sense of purpose, it’s all connected. Life doesn’t have to be compartmentalized." — Bernard Trainor

Innately connected to the landscape, he has a reverence for soil, plants, and nature that runs deep. Their conversation thoughtfully wanders like Bernard's hillside garden, sharing a deep appreciation for purpose, craft, and the work we are all so fortunate to do.

I have been invited by @anacapa_architecture to present a solo exhibit at The Front Space in Santa Barbara.

ABSORB is a series of paintings I have been exploring for some time, and I am very excited to share my work. The work explores the pattern language of the landscape sites I visit — the eco-types, the colors and textures, the play of light and shadow that create the genius loci of a place. It's where I live, at the intersection of art and science.

I hope you can visit to see it in person.
