RIP Jesse Jackson, one of the most prominent Civil Rights leaders of the 20th and early 21st centuries, longstanding friend and comrade of Bernie Grant MP, and supporter of many key campaigns for the rights of Britain’s Black Communities.

Bernie Grant and Jesse Jackson worked on many issues together, including challenging racist policing practices, staunch involvement in the Anti-Apartheid Movement and Free Mandela campaign, and the launching of Black political initiatives, including the Parliamentary Black Caucus. by @berniegranttrust

Reparations is a topic of constant relevance. In 1993, Bernie Grant MP founded the African Reparations Movement (ARM), as the British arm of the global movement for Reparations. One of ARM’s major activities was to campaign for the return of looted African artefacts by @berniegranttrust

We’re marking the first day of Black History Month with the following documents from the Bernie Grant Archives held at Bishopsgate Institute.

‘Roots in Britain: An Exhibition of Black and Asian Citizens from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II’, was hosted at Haringey Libraries in the Summer of 1981. This exhibition, organised by Race Relations Advisor and political activist Dorothy Kuya, with the input of Bernie Grant during his time as councillor for Bruce Grove, is the first known public exhibition on Black British history by @berniegranttrust

OTD 1st August 1993, Joy Gardner’s life support machine was turned off and she was declared officially dead. But as argued by her family, supporters, and members of the Joy Gardner Campaign, she was effectively killed on 28th July when a team of police and immigration officers entered her home in an attempt to deport her. They subsequently tied her up, gagged her, and used a body belt to restrain her, all in the presence of her then-5 year old son.

The Joy Gardner Campaign demanded a full public enquiry into the circumstances of Joy’s death, a demand which was never met. Although three officers were charged with her unlawful killing, they were acquitted in June 1995.

Bernie Grant MP worked with the Joy Gardner Campaign for justice. Decades on, Joy’s mother Myrna Simpson continues to seek justice not only for Joy, but all people wrongfully killed by the police, and those who have been mistreated by Britain’s immigration policies. by @berniegranttrust
