Setting up the new studio..

It’s in a scruffy industrial park… but my window overlooks a shipping company with two Palestinian flags displayed at their entrance 🍉

I’m enjoying the industrial park vibes .. My space has good energy and the people here are kind. 💛

This is a painting I started months ago and then got frustrated with how it went… things didn’t feel right so I rolled it up and we ignored each other…. until today.

It finally shifted .. and I’m in love with it, all the shades of green (and with this song).

still a #workinprogress but had to share the revelation straight from the studio 🌱

MAY recap:

1. An imaginary #landscape. This is a painting on a printed board that once said “dance like no one is watching”. It has a sister landscape painting over a board that said “sing like no one is listening”. I wonder if an X-ray might reveal the hidden layers.
2. A close-up of said imaginary landscape. 🎨
3. Broken stuff from a while ago. Only made it to the bin last week. #lettinggo

Thank you to everyone who got messy with WET PAINT at @foodartfair today. We had such a blast.

Using painting and pastry, we asked a simple question that speaks to universal experience:
Why do we want to touch things we’re told not to?

And then, more specifically:
What happens when the thing that we touch is cake?

So many of you gathered round the canvas- come- cake to test the tension between prohibition and temptation, negotiating the boundaries between looking, touching and tasting. We didn’t know how long it would take for someone to take the first bite- or who that would be- but once it happened, there was no stopping it.

As the day progressed, each interaction changed the work. Consumption became a form of participation.

We were delighted to be in such fabulous, innovative and delicious company today. Thank you to @maisongb @emily.leah.cooks @druvduggl and all the FAF team 🤍🍰🎨 by @berryfieldstudio

We’re excited to welcome WET PAINT by Nour Yakoob - nuun @nuun.cakes and Leen Kay - Berryfield Studio @berryfieldstudio to FAF — Food Art Fair.

You know the sign.

WET PAINT.

And you know what happens next.

The moment we’re told not to touch something, we suddenly want to.

Created by pastry chef and cake designer Nour Yakoob and multidisciplinary artist and designer Leen Kay, WET PAINT is an interactive edible installation exploring prohibition, desire, temptation and the impulse to touch.

The work looks finished. A sign tells visitors to keep their distance.

But eventually, someone will touch it.

And discover that they can eat it.

With every interaction, the installation changes. A piece is taken. A surface is marked. What lies beneath is exposed. The next visitor encounters the evidence left by those before them.

Here, consumption becomes participation — and destruction becomes part of the making.

Why do we want to touch the things we’re told not to?

And what happens when the thing we’re not supposed to touch is designed to be eaten?

A small series of unpopular art opinions and thoughts on practice.

#2 Not every good idea deserves an artwork.

Artists often talk about creative blocks and what happens when the ideas run dry. It’s a real and valid part of the creative process.

But we rarely talk about the opposite: when there are too many ideas, too many projects brewing, and the temptation to make everything.

Not every idea needs to become an artwork.
Some are better left as notes, conversations, observations, or questions. They can still shape a practice without becoming an object.

Knowing what not to make is just as important as knowing what to make.

Hey! #wait

What if waiting isn’t the space between where you are and where you’re meant to be?

What if it is where something quietly begins?

Waiting is especially hard when it feels like the whole world is moving forward except you.

When everyone else seems to be arriving, building, becoming... and you’re still here, in the #pause.

But sometimes the pause isn’t empty.

Sometimes it’s all that a seed needs to take root.
All that a restless mind needs to settle.
All that a heart needs to heal.
All that a life needs to quietly rearrange itself beneath the surface.

Growth doesn’t always look like movement. 🌱

Had 1 hour to tidy up and have lunch… but I forgot why I was in the studio today .. and may have drifted into impulsive flower sketching.. and no tidying up whatsoever.

Loving these and the way they make me feel. 🩵
