🎞️🧫 El cuerpo de la imagen | Palabras de Berta Ibáñez
El pasado 27 de septiembre, Berta Ibáñez [@berta_ibanez] presentó la charla “El cuerpo de la imagen: La celulosa bacteriana como soporte gráfico” en la nueva edición de OPEN Portfolio, celebrada en la @rekaldearetoa de Bilbao. Durante la intervención despertó mucha curiosidad entre el público por este material tan singular.

Su práctica híbrida, que explora la unión entre fotografía y soporte, convirtió la imagen en un objeto físico y plástico. La celulosa bacteriana, un biomaterial cultivado, abrió un universo de posibilidades: cada lámina tiene texturas y propiedades únicas que hacen que cada imagen sea irrepetible, aunque la técnica fotográfica sea reproducible. Se crea así un diálogo fascinante entre la precisión técnica de la fotografía y la singularidad material, transformando la imagen en un objeto con presencia física y sensorial.

Six weeks of creation and research at the @basquebiodesigncenter, with the support of @culturemoveseurope.
How can we work in collaboration with living organisms, not as objects but as subjects playing an active role in the process of creating the photographic object?
Imagining new, more sustainable modes of creation and production; exploring the intersections between art, technology, experimentation and sustainability.
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biomaterial first discovered by Adrian J. Brown in 1886. However, it was only in the early 2000s that the scientific community began to show an exponential interest in this material, which is naturally made from an assembly of sugars very similar to the cellulose found in plants. Contrary to what you might think, it’s not just plants that produce cellulose; bacteria, yeast and fungi do too.
Although bacterial cellulose shares similarities with plant cellulose, bacteria, especially those of the genus Acetobacter, create it with unique characteristics. They use this biomaterial to protect themselves and to move around. What’s more, the fibres they produce are extremely long, considerably increasing the biomaterial’s mechanical strength.
All these properties make bacterial cellulose a very promising biomaterial for various uses in fields such as medicine, architecture, the fashion industry, etc.

En esta etapa de su investigación, ha realizado diferentes pruebas, creando biobasados a base de residuos orgánicos y cultivando celulosa bacteriana.

🍄 El ciclo de las sombras 🌱
La artista y diseñadora Giuliana Califano está desarrollando su proyecto en la residencia BIZIRIK. Este proyecto interdisciplinario explora "el potencial del micelio y los hongos como materiales en evolución para la creación de arte que cambia con el tiempo".

El objetivo principal es investigar si los materiales a base de micelio y biomateriales pueden adaptarse a la impresión 3D en cerámica para producir esculturas y artefactos que se transformen después de su creación: "creciendo, descomponiéndose o incluso integrándose con el entorno natural".
