🤿 Diving with a Giant Pacific Octopus 🐙

Octopus are one of most fascinating creatures on planet earth 🌏. The Giant Pacific Octopus (GPO) is the largest weighing around 15-25 kg on average. The biggest one ever recorded was 270 kg 🤯.

They have 8 arms, equipped with 200-300 suckers on each arm. Each arm has a ganglia (it's own brain 🧠 ). Counting their central brain, that makes 9 brains total ‼️ The suckers are individually controlled and have chemical receptors to sense, taste, touch, and smell.

An adult GPO is usually 4-5 m in length. Thats the length of a small car 🚗. But some can grow as long as 12 m. That is the size of a school bus 🚌.

Giant Pacific Octopus are my favourite sea creature. What is your favourite?

🐟 Black Rockfish of the Pacific Northwest

Black rockfish are a classic sight while scuba diving the rocky reefs of British Columbia. These long-lived fish can often be found cruising above reefs, along steep walls, and through the kelp forests that make the Pacific Northwest such an incredible place to dive.

We came across this while scuba diving at God’s Pocket near northern Vancouver Island, where cold, nutrient-rich water supports an incredible diversity of marine life. This particular video footage is from a dive site called Butter Tart.

🌙 Moon Jellyfish Bloom in the Saanich Inlet 🪼

Yesterday I led a dropin dive at Willis Pt with @divevictoriabc. I didn't have my GoPro with me but I wish I did. There were so many moon jellies out. It was twice as crazy as you see in this video. 🤪 📽

I grabbed a tank and went back this morning with my GoPro. It was still really dense with jellies but it was thicker yesterday. 💯

The coolest stuff always happens when you forget your camera. At least I was able to capture this morning's experience on camera, which is still one of best jellyfish blooms I've ever dove in. 😎 🤙 taken in Willis Point by @beseaadventures

Every fall, the kelp in Metchosin fills with ghosts.

Hooded nudibranch blooms show up on southern Vancouver Island starting around the end of September, and one of my favourite dive spots in Metchosin gets one of the biggest in the area. They are see through, they swim, and they feed by opening a giant hood to catch whatever drifts past.

Have you ever seen a hooded nudibranch bloom? Tell me where in the comments.

Happy Thanksgiving

In the cold waters of British Columbia, sponges, corals, anemones create a beautiful array of colour.

Cold water reefs are some of the most vibrant under the sea.

Cutting Through the Snag

Ghost gear removal at Sidney Pier on Vancouver Island: our volunteers pulled 250 kg of derelict fishing gear and marine debris out of the Salish Sea, and 45 percent of it was line, rope and cable. This tangled ghost gear wraps around the pilings, locks abandoned crab traps into huge snags and puts seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales at risk. Cutting it free in strong current took serious teamwork.

Everyone who dove and everyone who supported from shore was excellent, and I’m sincerely grateful for all the help from the whole team. Thank you. I want to take a moment to thank and highlight the divers involved.

We had five divers, split into two teams, and we made two dives. Peter and John worked on the two smaller snags to the north. They were efficient and diligent, removing a significant number of abandoned crab traps and a shopping cart.

Sean, Trent and I took on the biggest snag on the corner, a mess of traps, net, rope and cable wrapped around a piling. It took both dives to finish it. Trent and Sean spent a lot of time cutting through the snag while I mostly managed the retrieval ropes from above.

Thank you again to all our volunteers from Wilson’s Diving, Emerald Sea Protection Society, Surfrider South Vancouver Island and the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea.

Arm Wrestling With an Octopus?

No not really...but this one was super curious. Giant Pacific Octopus are magnificent creatures. It's a magical moment if one interacts with you.

Have you ever had an octopus grab you before?

Marine Life Under The Sidney Pier

I've been posting a fair bit about the ghost gear at the Sidney Waterfront, but its not all doom and gloom below the Pier.

Sidney Waterfront has a vibrant and diverse marine ecosystem. Plumose anemones and purple sea stars crowd the pilings, sea pens and crabs cover the seafloor, while jellyfish drift by the divers. And amongst the rubble, you can find a poacher sitting in the sand.

Scuba Diving for Ghost Gear is a lot of fun but admiring our beautiful sea creatures is still my favourite.

Ghost Gear Clean Up at Sidney Pier

On October 4th in Sidney BC, divers, volunteers, aquarium staff and members of community helped to clean up 100s of kilos of abandoned fishing gear from the Sidney Pier.

This spot is a popular crabbing and fishing place on Vancouver Island. Above the water sits a sunny, beautiful location to hang out with your family. But below the water is an underwater graveyard of lost, stuck, and abandoned gear. Often referred to as "Ghost Gear".

Surfrider, Emerald Sea Protection Society, Be Sea Adventures and the Shaw Center for the Salish Sea (Sidney Aquarium) joined forces for a collaborive effort in organizing this Ghost Gear Retrieval Project. Months of planning, coordinating within the community, and obtaining the correct authorization and permission for this activity went into this initiative.

A big thank you to all our divers, volunteers, helpers and sponsors. Red Barn in Sidney, Thrifty Foods in Sidney, Slegg Build Supplies in Sidney, and Wilson Diving in Colwood.

A lot of fun, a lot of work, and great for the community and the environment. Even a family of orcas swam by at the very end. One person said, "That is the ocean saying thank you". taken in Sidney, British Columbia by @beseaadventures

Salvage From Sidney Pier Ghost Gear Retrieval Project

We are back at it again and this time we brought more friends to help.

Teaming up with @surfridersvi @emeraldseasociety @salishseacentre we went back to the Sidney Pier to finish what we started in the spring.

There were 3 huge snags at the far end of pier. 5 divers, 2 dives and a bunch if help on the surface.

Big thank you to all involved.

Born in a stream. Raised in the open Pacific. And then, against all odds, they come home.

Salmon migration in British Columbia and Alaska is one of the most incredible wildlife events in the Pacific Northwest. Every year, Pacific salmon return from the open ocean to the exact stream where they were born.

This footage comes from a family trip to Ketchikan, Alaska, where we watched the salmon climb the falls and fish ladders, and from snorkeling and freediving the run in Campbell River with @pnwsamson.

Seeing it up close, from above and below the surface, is something I'll never forget.

Tidepooling at Tower Point - Part 3 🦀

You never know what might be hiding beneath the sand or tucked away between the rocks when exploring the tidepools around Vancouver Island!

This time, we came across a Red Rock Crab, one of the familiar crabs found along the British Columbia and Pacific Northwest coastline.

Here's something interesting: looking at a crab from above, it's pretty difficult to tell whether it's male or female. But flip it over (carefully!) and you'll find an easy way to tell. The shape of the flap on the abdomen, is different between the sexes. Males have a narrow, triangular-shaped flap, while females have a much wider, rounded one. The female's broader abdomen provides space for carrying eggs.

Another cool fact about red rock crabs is how they deal with low tide. They can hide beneath rocks or partially bury themselves in sand, gravel and mud. This helps protect them from predators like seabirds, fish and sea otters while keeping them sheltered from exposure on the shoreline.
