A Vet’s guide to transitioning to a new litter in 7 days, without stress.

Cats are incredibly sensitive to change,
especially when it comes to their litter tray.

Whether you are changing to a new clumping cat litter,
looking for better odour control, or
searching for the best cat litter in Australia for your home,
the transition matters.

A new smell,
new texture,
new tray position, or
sudden change in routine can feel like a big deal to them,
even if it seems small to us.

And the tricky part?

Cats often do not show stress clearly until it has already become a problem.

That is why I always recommend a slow, calm transition when changing litter.

Here is a simple 7 day guide:

Day 1 to 2:
Add 25% new litter to 75% of their usual litter.

Day 3:
Move to 40% new litter and 60% old litter.

Day 4:
Move to 50% new litter and 50% old litter.

Day 5 to 6:
Use 75% new litter and 25% old litter.

Day 7:
Transition fully to the new litter, as long as your cat is using the tray confidently.

Go slowly.
Watch their behaviour.
And never force the change if your cat is unsure.

Bringing home a new cat or kitten?
Or just introduced one? 🐱

If no one has told you this yet, keep their diet exactly the same for the first week.

One of the biggest mistakes I see as a Veterinarian is well-meaning owners introducing lots of new foods as soon as their furbaby comes home.

The first week is already a huge adjustment.
New sights, new smells, new people and a completely different environment can all be stressful.

Some cats may even eat or drink less during the first 24 hours, and stress alone can contribute to soft stools or diarrhoea.

Changing their diet at the same time can increase the risk of digestive upset, food refusal and even toileting issues.

💚 My advice:
✔ Continue feeding exactly what your breeder, rescue or previous owner has been feeding for the first 7 days.
✔ If you weren't given this information, ask them what diet your new cat has been eating and continue it during the adjustment period.

After the first week, if you'd like to change foods,
introduce only 🔔ONE NEW FOOD EVERY 3 DAYS🔔
This includes treats.

If your cat develops:
• Soft stools or diarrhoea
• Vomiting
• Excessive gas
• Blood in the stool
• Poor appetite

…it becomes much easier to identify whether a newly introduced food may be contributing.

Remember, these signs can also be caused by intestinal parasites or other medical conditions,
so always seek veterinary advice if you're concerned.

🐛 Don't forget parasite prevention!🐛

Use an intestinal all-wormer that protects against roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm and whipworm.

🛡️ Flea and tick prevention is also essential, even for indoor cats.

Fleas can be brought into your home by people or other pets, and if you live in a paralysis tick area, tick prevention can literally save your cat's life.
Always use products specifically made for cats.

I 1 in 4 new businesses in Australia don’t survive their first year.

So, to be named a North Shore Local Business Awards - Finalist
as Best Fur Forward celebrates just 12 months in business is truly what dreams are made of.

Only 12 months after launching MATCHA litter,
with the hope of sharing my purrfect litter with our beautiful cat community,
I honestly still can’t believe this is real.

Behind those 12 months has been a lot of juggling.
Continuing to work as a Veterinarian,
raising a family, and building a new business from the ground up.

Teddy is a very fussy boy especially when it comes to his litter, I’m sure other cat parents can relate right!?

Cats will tell you exactly what they think.
