OPENING RECEPTION

Gallery Hours

11am - 4pm

BEST PRACTICE is pleased to present Tierra y Cielo, a solo exhibition of recent works by Southern California-based artist noé olivas. Through sculpture, painting, video, and installation, the exhibition reflects on migration, memory, and belonging, while calling upon our deepest selves, our ancestors, and the divine for guidance during these tumultuous times.

noé olivas is a multidisciplinary artist, cultural worker, educator, and cofounder of Crenshaw Dairy Mart, a community art space centered on ancestry, abolition, and healing. Raised in a working-class, first-generation Mexican family, olivas grounds his practice in the lived realities of labor, migration, and intergenerational knowledge. Working across sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, printmaking, video, performance, and archival research, he explores what he calls the Poetics of Labor: the socio-political and spiritual dimensions of labor, lineage, and liberation.

Through collaborative and community-based projects, olivas examines the often-invisible labor that sustains everyday life while tracing its circulation between Southern California and the U.S.–Mexico border. Rooted in the Chicanx tradition of Rasquachismo and informed by the Black Assemblage Movement, his work transforms found and everyday materials into acts of collective remembrance, healing, and resistance, asserting that creativity is inseparable from community and that art-making can function as a form of spiritual repair.

Join @secretcity.socal and @taller.california.books for the launch of INSURGENT ARCHIVES FROM THE SECRET CITY on Saturday August 29th at 6pm at @bestpracticeok

This artist book traces San Diego's antiwar movement within the military from 1969 to 1972 through a collection of photographs, periodicals, and publications.

Supported by eights years of research and interviews with elder activists, artist Evan Apodaca pairs long-forgotten archival treasures with his own written interpretations. In doing so, the artist reframes this movement as a strategy for anti-imperialist organizing-offering a provocative template for the present.

We will hear from the artist and the folks who helped preserve the archive and embark on a discussion about generational shifts in approaches to agitprop. Video interviews will also be on view in the gallery.

There’s only a few more days left to catch mine and mika’s two-person show at BEST PRACTICE!!! This show was truly one of my dreams and I’m so grateful it got to happen. Thank you to everyone who has seen it, hovered in the space, and had coffee with me here!

This cyanotype concealed by a translucent curtain made of piña barong fabric features imagery taken from the exterior of Vien Dong, a grocery store that makes me feel at home, and family portraits that still hang in my family’s home. This veil becomes a way to withhold, allowing viewers some legibility but denying total access to the image. The curtain is an echo of the domestic, the body, a barrier, and here acts as a layer of protection. During our opening, I saw two people look around and then flip the curtains open for a peek (girl, do NOT touch the art!). As a friend said about my ICA show, “you give so much, and people still want more.” 🤲🏼😶‍🌫️

… And love dares you to care for [a michelada with San Miguel] is up through August 15!

MIKA CASTAÑEDA + CAT GUNN
…And love dares you to care for [a michelada with San Miguel]

through August 15th

…And love dares you to care for [a michelada with San Miguel] is a two-person show featuring new works by mika Castañeda and Cat Gunn. Both artists utilize materials and imagery that imply the physical hands or touch the objects once felt, as well as the traces and resonances of these touches. Their emphasis on fragments of personal archives, notes, gifts, and recorded memories aligns with their overlapping themes of queerness, (in)visibility, material memory, and resisting archival violence. By examining these fragments through their individual art practices, Castañeda and Gunn make visible that which is unseen— through transmitting memory, their labor, and the care instilled into the staging of objects.

Archives are alive, pulsing with history, memory, and ruin. Simultaneously, they are fragmentary, evoking a longing for a time and place you cannot name. Archives bridge the past, present, and future, symbolic of the inevitability of our time slipping away.

There is a current movement of queer artists looking backward and engaging with various queer archives or legacies within their contemporary studio practices. This deep preoccupation with the queer archive is, in part, due to the lingering and residual effects of the AIDS crisis, an utter catastrophe ignored and perpetuated by the United States government, leading to the loss of an entire generation—a crisis, which 45 years later, is still not yet over. The urgency of this archival engagement is now inflamed as the Trump Administration again attempts to erase and remove all traces of queer and gender expansive histories, which we know have always existed in any histories of America. The afterlife of ephemera becomes a tactic of resistance. To perform queer history, to grapple with our collective pasts, allows us to look toward our queer futures.
