I’ve had two father figures in my life, neither of them were my father. I worked for Phillip Pechak for many years. He was a very complicated man. A true dichotomy, on any given day, he was either the biggest asshole you ever met or the nicest guy. A true renaissance man, he was the best Carpenter I ever met, an artist, a drummer, a fisherman and a ladies man. I learned so much about carpentry and work ethic from him. After a 12 hour day in the Memphis heat, he would say “well I guess I’ll let you take a half day“, and then I saw him drink a beer and do a handstand on the peak of the roof at 52. In his later years, he became interested in spirituality and wrote a book. I was trying to finish the book to talk to him about it before he died. I tried to go see him the other day, but he didn’t want anyone to see him and he basically said goodbye to me over the phone. I told him I loved him and that he was a mentor to me, and he just said “you were a mentor to me too. “

Get @reshare_app • @blacklodgenow The Indie Memphis Film Festival returns Nov. 5th - 8th!

Come explore not only great national releases, but also all the incredible cinema being made locally. Films like the brilliant drama HALLELUJAH STATION, screening on Friday, Nov. 6th…

“Directed by Memphis filmmaker Christian Walker and written by former Memphian author M. Randal O’Wain, this evocative short feature is a gritty, intensely atmospheric exploration of isolation and madness. The narrative centers on Manny, the weary janitor of a bleak asylum, who stumbles upon a shocking discovery regarding one of the patients. Plunging into a dark psychological descent, the film utilizes confined spaces and stark cinematography to examine the blurred lines between sanity and delusion.”

I just realized that this record recently turned 25 years old. Half my life ago. Musically, it’s probably the thing I’m most proud of. This was when I finally started to assert myself as a songwriter, although it’s hard to tell because I lost the battle of adding song credits to the record, but I wrote a good bit, including this one. Well, most of it, because nothing escaped the full band writing process. This was the end of us being a full time touring band, and we capped it off with a Europe tour, two weeks after 9/11 and what we thought was going to be our last show when we got back home, but we see how that worked out. We still get together and play sometimes, but I really just do it to hang out with the dudes. It feels a little disheartening sometimes how much energy we put into it and how few people cared, and I know we probably would’ve been more popular if we had faked an accent or worn the latest trousers, but we were always honest and we gave a fuck about stuff, and that doesn’t always equal popularity or dollar signs. We had some beautiful times though, and I wouldn’t trade any of it. There’s no such thing as good ol days. by @bestrevenge

After a year on the Festival circuit, I’m proud to announce that I will be ending the Festival run of Hallelujah Station at our very own Indie Memphis film festival in November. It feels like a beautiful capstone to our journey with this film and I hope that you will come check it out if you haven’t seen it. It felt really good to see all those people tonight and to know that our city still has a great Festival. Years ago, I made a movie called Slaughterhouse PHI, a violent revenge fantasy against a group of frat boys who committed an atrocity very similar to the Cornell incident. I wrote it as an exploration of hearing men say what they would do to other men, if something like that happened to someone they cared about. I wrote it after hearing a similar story from somebody close to me, and since I made that film, I’ve heard similar stories over and over and over again. The tagline for that film was “Sometimes violence is the proper response”. I illustrated in that film what I thought should happen to men who do things like that. I hope those men get whats coming to them. by @bestrevenge

Hey friends. I’ve been trying to live a more analog life so I deleted these apps off my phone. But I wanted to jump back on and say thanks to everyone who has reached out on my 49th today and that I’m real grateful for all of you, especially my bride @victoriatcb. You all make me grateful to be here in spite of the world being stupid as fuck. Thanks and praises. Love y’all. I’m gonna delete this off my phone again for a while. by @bestrevenge
