“It is not in the substance, but in the way of seeing.”

This reflection by Hungarian Roma writer Tamás Jónás opens a fundamental question about contemporary Romani literature: what does it mean to write as a Roma author when Roma identity is not necessarily the subject of the work?

This question becomes the point of departure for a conversation at ERIAC Berlin between Tamás Jónás, Carmen Baltzar (@bestsmellingauthor) and Damian James Le Bas (@damianlebas), whose practices, generations and experiences offer very different ways of approaching authorship.

Moderated by Dr. Anna Mirga-Kruszelnicka, ERIAC Executive Director, the conversation will explore how identity enters literature without becoming its prescribed subject, as well as the influence of language, translation and different literary traditions on a book’s reception and visibility.

The discussion will also explore the emergence of Romani PEN and new spaces for Roma writers and literary exchange.

✨ BEST FILM AWARD WINNER ✨

“All the love in my body” by Carmen Baltzar @bestsmellingauthor unfolds on a sunny beach in Greece from the point of view of Nadia and Samara, two young Romani sisters selling wooden turtles.
The girls navigate the beach with wit, boredom, joy and frustration, interacting with a varied cast of sunbathers. Samara is focused on sales, while her younger sister Nadia gets caught up in people-watching and daydreams.
Their day takes a jarring turn before the sun goes down.

We congratulate you, Carmen for this amazing storytelling, your artistry & for winning this years best film of the 10th edition of AKE DIKHEA? ✨ We are extremely honoured to be presenting your film again tonight at 19 Uhr at @sinematranstopia as one of the three winner films.
