My first bodybuilding prep is over 🥺🥲
20 weeks, 2 shows, 3 🥈and 1 🥇

It was really important to me to do my last show in Boston, the place I’ve been avoiding since I graduated college. The contest venue Royale was the last place I went before school shut down for Covid. I told myself I would never come back to Boston again because I didn’t want to be reminded of how unhappy school made me.

The Jay Cutler Classic was exactly 3 years after I took my graduation photos at a random park near my house because I hated school so much I refused to even go back for my own graduation. I was burnt out, tired of people pleasing and felt like all the work I put into school or internships was only to make my parents proud. I didn’t know what I was going to do with this useless degree that I destroyed my mental health for.

Bodybuilding gave me a chance to relive my childhood experience of working hard to achieve a dream, except this time it was one I chose for myself, not one that was forced onto me. I realized the things I was taught to work hard for as a child like grades and job titles were meaningless to me. The delayed gratification of going through an entire growth phase and prep gave me a high that no form of external validation can ever beat.

Coming back to Boston after 3 years as a completely different person who values her health, knows what she wants and fully believes she deserves a place in any room she walks into made me feel like I’ve fully healed and forgiven myself for the bitter, insecure person I used to be.

Bodybuilding might be expensive and time consuming and it was really difficult to make it fit with every day life, but I know for sure that it makes me a better person so I’ll find a way to make it work 🤞 taken in Royale by @beta_alaurine

I call these my almond mom rice krispie treats 😂

3 cups @prozis brown rice crisps (use regular crisped rice if you want a puffier texture)
3/4 cup any nut butter (I used @prozis cashew butter)
1/2 cup @prozis peanut powder for extra nutty flavor (optional)
1/3 cup maple syrup
3-5 80% dark chocolate squares depending how thick of a coating you want

1. Combine the nut butter, maple syrup, and peanut powder in a bowl. If you use a natural peanut butter you won’t need to heat it to get the right consistency.
2. Fold in your cereal with a greased rubber spatula. Pour a little at a time until it’s evenly combined.
3. Line a brownie pan with greased parchment paper and press the mixture into the pan with a spatula until the top is flat.
4. Melt your desired amount of chocolate in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds to avoid clumps.
5. Spread the chocolate on top of the rice krispies with a spatula.
6. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours or until the chocolate hardens.

Enjoy! 🍫

You can try all the products from @prozis and there’s a 50% cash back sale right now where you get 50% store credit back on any purchase with code CASHBACK.

I received so much support for sharing my experience with my recent meniscus tear one week before my planned Hyrox, so I want to start sharing my recovery journey to hold myself accountable and show that it’s possible to get your strength back with patience 🫶

⚠️ Please keep in mind that this is not medical advice. See a professional to diagnose your injury and determine what exercises are safe for you. My injury is also far less severe than some other instances and I’m fortunate to still have a few exercises I can safely complete.

I have medial and lateral meniscus tears in both knees, but not large enough to require surgery. I most likely got them by ramping up my running volume too quickly while maintaining heavy lifting during Hyrox prep and continuing to train on sore legs for weeks.

Standard advice for meniscus tears is to avoid knee flexion like squats and lunges, as well as high impact activity like running and jumping. I also feel pain on loaded knee extension, stairs, and downhill walking.

The most frustrating part is the stiffness and strength loss in my glutes and hamstrings, which I didn’t expect. The injury altered my muscle recruitment patterns and made it difficult to feel during exercises. Or maybe I had underlying overuse strains I never addressed. I’ve gone from hip thrusting 3 plates and RDLing 135+ to barely doing bodyweight.

I’m determined to keep my lower body strong to prevent injury when I return to running, which means experimenting to find pain free modifications. That means stripping exercises to bodyweight and bands, limiting range of motion, and swapping barbells for machines.

It’s humbling to feel like I’m starting over again, and it’s not as fun when you can’t lift big badass weight. But overall I know my injury is far less severe than others and I’m fortunate to not need surgery. When I stopped feeling sorry for myself I finally felt empowered to discover what I CAN do and I know I’ll be able to return to hybrid training eventually ☺️

I took my knees for granted and beat them to death because I was mad that I couldn’t run faster or lift heavier 🤕 Now I have a torn meniscus in both knees and can’t go up or down the stairs without pain.

It’s time to hang up the competitive athlete goals right now and train to have my independence back again.

Taking my rehab exercises very seriously and doing them consistently just like it’s a real sport. Keeping a set of @prozis resistance bands in my bag wherever I go so there’s never an excuse to skip my exercises no matter where I am (code BETA10 saves you 10% if you want to get your own set!)

High protein berry chocolate chip oat bars 🍫🍓 (no protein powder needed!)

Ingredients:
1 can chickpeas drained (just trust!)
1/3 cup oats ground into flour + 2 tbsp whole
1/3 cup @prozis cashew butter (code BETA10 for 10% off)
1/3 cup maple syrup
1 ripe banana
1 tbsp @prozis powdered peanut butter (code BETA10 for 10% off)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
Cinnamon to taste
Berries of choice
Dark chocolate chips/chunks

1. Drain and rinse your chickpeas and pat them dry (this removes the bean taste and keeps the texture brownie-like instead of watery)
2. Grind oats into flour and combine with salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and peanut powder.
3. In a blender add the chickpeas, banana, maple syrup, cashew butter, and vanilla extract. You can add a splash of almond milk if the batter gets too thick to help it blend smoother.
4. Fold the dry mixture into the wet batter. Add in your whole oats for extra texture.
5. Pour into a greased 8x8 brownie pan.
6. Slice your berries into 1/4s to prevent them from sinking to the bottom and add on top. Add your chocolate chips/chunks
7. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out of the center clean.

I was super excited to try this because I’ve been trying to incorporate more legumes into my diet but I get a huge bean ick sometimes! Chickpeas are a good plant based protein if you’re a vegan but even I eat meat and like to switch it up sometimes. They’re a good source of fiber and great for heart health.

Let me know if you try these!

I baked this Japanese sweet potato bread for Mother’s Day! Going for the same texture as banana bread but with the nutty taste of Japanese sweet potato 🍠 🍞

Ingredients:
1 medium Japanese sweet potato
1 large egg
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 3/4 cup flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
Dark chocolate chips

1. Poke holes in the sweet potato and steam in the microwave for 9 min.
2. Combine egg, yogurt, melted coconut oil, maple syrup in a bowl.
3. Remove the potato skin and mash with a fork then fold into the wet batter.
4. Combine all the dry ingredients and slowly whisk in a little at a time into the wet batter until there are no clumps.
5. Fold in chocolate chips.
6. Pour into a greased loaf pan lined with parchment and bake at 350F for 45 min.

The batter looks really thick after mixing but once it was baked it still came out cakey and moist! Happy Mothers Day and lmk if you try this 💓

I used to scrutinize every gram of food that went into my body but when I started training hybrid I genuinely could not be bothered anymore 😭

Getting all my preworkout carbs from rice cakes and fruit wasn’t working anymore and my stomach would slosh around when I ran and jumped 🤢

Instead of spending lots of money on gels, I’ve found it a lot easier to use packaged snacks like energy bars and fruit snacks. They take up less room in my stomach and it’s a fun treat to look forward to when I’m dreading a run the next morning.

Eating around 30g of carbs before a morning run helps me sustain my energy and pace for the full hour. I like to have @prozis energy crunch bar as my pre-run snack (code BETA10 will save you $)

I still eat plenty of protein, fiber, and color in my diet throughout the day but I’m much less precise with weighing and tracking now that my goal is performance over aesthetics. My bodyweight hasn’t changed at all since making this shift and my aerobic conditioning has significantly improved. I can get used to it over here 🏃‍♀️💨🪨⭐️

I’m 2 months into my hybrid training journey 🏃‍♀️

I’ve only stared taking running seriously in January. The most I had ever run in my life was 2 miles for conditioning as a high school lacrosse athlete almost 10 years ago.

I will always wish I could be faster or run for longer but the fact that I went from almost nothing to 6+ miles in 2 months is not too shabby. Endurance training challenges me in a new way and as long as it’s painful and feels impossible then I’m all for it 🤣 My legs feel busted by the third mile already even though it doesn’t even feel like this is a crazy distance or pace

I still have no Hyrox tickers secured but want to be prepared in case I can snag them last minute and worst case I’d like to be in shape enough to hop into a 10k or eventually a half marathon 🙊
