Hi y’all! You know what might be Oxford’s perfect antidote to upcoming LSU game madness? A little luscious one-on-one time with a really good book. Luckily our next BYOB is right around the corner: Tues. Sept. 22, 6pm, at The Graduate Hotel, 400 N Lamar, in the lobby. We held a BYOB at the Graduate once before and it was a few people’s favorite locale—comfy couches! Good bartender!—so we’re delighted they are welcoming us back! If you’re new, all you need to know is this: BYOB—Bring your own book! I’ll be there around 5:30, so feel free to settle in any time after that! When you arrive, you’ll be randomly assigned a table. This means whether you come solo or with a family member or pal from a book club, you’ll be sitting with strangers, which is kinda sorta part of the point. Around 6pm I’ll welcome everyone. And then we’ll all read silently for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, we’ll have a quick 15 minute table chat (each table will be provided a bookish question to discuss). Then we’ll head back out into the Mississippi night, maybe feeling a little bit better about ourselves and the world. This community event is FREE—books are for everyone! Tell your people. I’ve been plagiarized and pirated by AI and just this week a piece of mine was posted on @the_problem_with_jon_stewart WITHOUT my name attached. Imagine how deflating it feels when thousands read something you wrote and over 1k click “like” and no one gives a damn about who the author is. So, yep, the writing life can suck at times. But then comes a time like this: you hear the former house of your favorite poet Elizabeth Bishop has been purchased by the @keywestliteraryseminar and renovated and they are even replanting her former garden based on what she wrote was there in her letters and you think, I wonder if I could get a mag to pay me to go to Key West and write about it and you do. You do. The gardener Alex took the photo of me on the bench—then hacked off for me a ripe banana from Bishop’s tree. Bronze it or eat it? I did what Lizzie would have wanted.
