{What does it mean to be me?}

{What does it mean to be you?}

We are woven with the disparate inferences of others. traces. impressions of being. shadows unto ourselves. shadows of things to come. manifesting being into different forms.

This piece began as an attempt to give shape to something I couldn’t otherwise hold: the sensation of life moving faster than I can keep pace with it. The weaving binds tightly in certain places, dense, gathered, knotted with concise effort, while elsewhere it opens into near-transparency, a few threads suggesting structure rather than proving it.

That contrast mirrors how this season of my life feels. I am pulled in directions I don’t always choose. Relationships shift, some deepen, some quietly come apart while other parts of life bloom without warning, demanding their own attention. I’ve had to accept that I cannot do everything I want to do in the time I have.

There is a yielding required, a willingness to be carried by the current rather than fight it.
What remains is the question of form: how much can loosen, thin, nearly disappear, while the whole still holds together?

These are two-dimensional digital collages that I made using images of my three-dimensional work. I have been thinking about surfaces, materiality, and the context in which work is received, and how I could play with these elements to arrive somewhere new.

For centuries, painters have used objects like skulls, wilting flowers, and rotting fruit as iconography to remind people that nothing lasts. These “vanitas” paintings were meant to sit in a room and suggest the same thing over and over: this too will end. But they were paintings. The fruit in them stayed frozen mid-decay forever. Zoe Leonard broke this formula. She’d spent years eating fruit, saving the empty skins, and stitching them back together by hand. Bananas, oranges, grapefruits, lemons all carefully preserved.

She made these after watching friends die one after another during the AIDS crisis, including one of her best friends, artist David Wojnarowicz. The sewing became her way of holding on to something that was already gone. And when she finally laid the fruit out across a gallery floor, she made a decision that broke with centuries of art-making: she refused to preserve it. She wanted it to actually rot, in public, over years as a way to connect and acknowledge the loss that was happening in view but being dismissed in the community.

Leonard’s fruits refuse erasure. They insist on decaying where everyone can see it. To face the loss.

Personally, I wasn’t ready for this installation. I was naively wandering through the galleries and was entirely blindsided once I turned the corner. It was completely overwhelming to see in person. Bravo @philamuseumart for having the foresight to recognize and acquire this important work in 1998.

Saints’ Rest, 2024
Oak Park, IL

Revisiting some of the processes involved in bringing my work ‘Saints’ Rest’ to fruition. This sculpture was installed in 2024, and has since endured two years in the elements. The material’s have evolved, which is an extension of the original idea surrounding impermanence.

My work lives in the space between vulnerability and force. Welding, sewing, and weaving let me work with materials that transform, bend, fuse, and hold tension the way relationships do.

I’m drawn to how an idea takes root, what sinks in and resonates, what gets lost along the way. Some sparks become extensions of the self; others are simply forgotten. My sculptures explore those uncertain processes of the dynamics between people, and the marks, residue, and structures those dynamics leave behind.

Idris Khan
Sky of Hope, 2026

Obama Presidential Library

Acrylic paint on acoustic paneling
Layered words from President Obama’s 2015 Selma speech expand and transform above you. Artist Idris Khan meticulously hand-stamped each word, layer on layer.
Up close, individual marks remain; from afar, their original meaning and context dissolves into a rippling, starburst-like shape. In a media-rich world, where words surround us but their impact can feel elusive, Khan offers a meditation on how meaning shifts through repetition and accumulation.

It’s really powerful being in this space and experiencing this communally. Beautiful work

{Progression, Perception and Material Shifts}

The circle is a form without hierarchy: no beginning, no end, no single direction privileged over another.

Inside these two welded forms, wool moves unevenly, doubling back, tightening and loosening, the way identity actually behaves, not as a fixed line but a shifting pattern held together by an evolving path. No two paths are the same, because no two lives are lived the same way. The steel doesn’t constrain the life inside it; it provides a perimeter in which to explore the variations of being.
