May 1st in Marfa, Texas in the cupola of the Presidio County Courthouse—we got married. 🤍

We slipped away to our favorite place and celebrated with just a handful of the people we love (and Foosh, of course).

It was absolute bliss - joyful, intentional, and completely us. We’re so happy to finally let you in on a little piece of that day, and many more little details to share soon.

My mom wrote a list on a piece of notebook paper years ago. It was a list of all the things she hoped I would find in a husband. I think I was in college, and I folded it up and kept it in a journal from the time. I kept every note she ever left, every card sent and it’s been a comfort finding them randomly over the last three years since she left us. When she passed, that folded up list was what I desperately needed to find, and in the meantime - I made my own list of what I hoped to find in a husband. A month after she passed, I met the man that I would marry…and he checked everything off of my list, and hers.

For our little wedding, my dearest friend Melissa @ranchosueno chain-stitched this banner that we will have forever with her words and her hopes, in her handwriting. And just like the original list, this gorgeous art has become a prized possession. It hung at @marfaspiritco for our tiny reception and photos of my beautiful momma found random nails in the antique boards to hang on.

The trim of her dress I took off her wedding gown that morning to tie around the bouquet I had made…

The words from a note I recently got on my wrist...

The corn casserole I made today to take to my mother-in-law’s house today because she loves it as much as I do…

The absolute joy in knowing I found the man she had always prayed for me to find…

Grief is heavier in the happy times, and I’ve felt it all throughout the planning…but she has felt so close. During the wedding and the days surrounding, it’s like she found a way to lighten it for me, so I could get through these beautiful days with a sense of peace…a light feeling of absolute bliss, an easy kind of euphoria. It was the kind of perfect I wasn’t even hoping for.

I randomly found myself downtown yesterday, driving past The Palm, and my heart dipped the way it does every time. Such a visceral memory trigger, that place. Then I realized, instantaneously, the day it was. Not the day we liked to go there with him—the 16th, his birthday. Or any other random day where something was to be celebrated… it would happen on any given (insert day of the week here). Yesterday was the day we lost him, nine years later. And I felt it. And I was moved to go there, to order a slightly dirty martini, to gaze upon his face. A face I missed. A face painted upon the wall that used to be an adornment he enjoyed, cheersing to himself with a laugh… now a quiet memorial. Explaining to strangers, unknowing bartenders, the legend that preceded them—I hated it. It annoyed me that they didn’t understand the fanfare that used to occur here because of him. Now he was a monument to us. To them, a barfly’s memory.

I’d had an emotional and beautiful day—trying on wedding dresses for the first time, missing my mother. Already wearing a shrug of grief and nostalgia. This seemed the fitting end. After all, Andrew loved moms, especially mine. He had met her once and gave her the full-court Andrew Dorff experience, and so she quickly knew to love him the way we all did. And he adored her—after all, she was mine. And Andrew loved me. He made it known with his over-affection, his over-protective nature. However he could adore me within the confines of being my lover’s best friend, he did. And he assumed that role perfectly. Big brother, protector, secret admirer.

I think of him so often. I share his memory with Rico, who I know he’d love. And I share it with whoever might listen. Cheers to many a barfly’s bartender who gets to hear a tale of the great Andrew Dorff and what he meant to us. May the spirits make you chatty and tell of his infamy joyfully. As that is what he was.
