They put us in @people magazine! 🤯🤯 Thank you so much to @johnny_dodd for writing this awesome profile on our story, mission, and program! 👇

Life is full of twists and turns, ups and downs, and everything in between. Neither one of us thought, several years ago, when we set out on this journey together, that we would be able to reach so many with the message of hope and compassion for those in need.

That’s what this is all about for us- hope. This epidemic can be so frustrating, so heart wrenching- but amidst that is an undercurrent of folks who care deeply about others, and have hope that things WILL GET BETTER. And sometimes it happens one tiny step at a time. That’s what harm reduction is all about.

Perry learned it in a really rough way, and Ingela has always seen the good in everyone, and thankfully we found each other and found a way to do some good wherever life takes us. Thank you everyone for your support, and as always, see ya on the road! 🤘🤘✌️✌️ by @betheplace

What if being your most authentic self is its own form of activism? On this week’s episode of It’s Giving, Ingela talks to singer-songwriter Lawrence Rothman @lawrencerothman about refusing to hide, on stage or off.

Fresh off the release of their new album, Here Lies Love / Sawdust to Stardust, Lawrence reflects on a career spent advocating for the freedom to be yourself, often at a cost. They open up about the 2010 Interview magazine spread that advertisers pulled out over because of how they dressed, and about refusing to water down “LAX,” a song about abusing laxatives, because they knew others were struggling in silence.

Plus, Lawrence makes the case that artists have a responsibility to show the human behind the performance, and calls for a culture that’s less judgmental and more forgiving of people still growing into themselves.

“The freedom to be oneself. A lot of artists before me have paved that way for me to be myself, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.”

This week on It’s Giving: Contra-ICE! In a special extended episode of the podcast, Ingela sits down with four artists featured on Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT, a multi-genre benefit album dropping October 2, put together by artist and activist Dali Colorado. The compilation features more than 30 musicians, including @mskathleenhanna Fred Armisen, @tommorello as well famed cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz @laloalcaraz1 serving as the project’s art director.

Uli Bella @ulibella of @ozomatli explains how the album grew out of a conversation with Dali, his best friend since sixth grade. He also describes what ICE raids have looked like in his own neighborhood, and why the money from this compilation is going to grassroots groups making a true difference, like Unión del Barrio @uniondelbarrio and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network @daylaborernetwork

Plus, Adrian Quesada @adrianmquesada of Black Pumas talks about growing up in a Texas border town and watching a longtime friend get profiled. Gretchen Parlato @gretchenparlato shares “Call in the Angels,” her song with poet Jasmine Becerra Green, and what daily life in LA feels like right now. And DJ and host Luxxury @luxxury traces the history of benefit records and explains why the uncomfortable conversations are worth having.

For Ingela, a Canadian who has called the US home for nearly 13 years, this one is personal.

“Let’s create something that people can buy, and use that money to help these organizations who are in the trenches right now.” — Uli Bella

The happiest 6 years of my life, and it’s all thanks to my beautiful wife Ingela! Our first date consisted of Chicken Rings and Jalapeño Poppers (yes, @whitecastle 🫣) and a long conversation about prison reform… Ingela was pissed that I didn’t kiss her, but I still stand by the decision, because well… White Castle! Since then she has taken me all over the world, places an Ohio boy never dreamed were possible! And we saved lives, got a corgi, and watched a million hours of reality TV along the way! Meeting Ingela has made everything that came before in my life worth it, the prison, Covid, all of it; because I don’t believe any other path would have led me to her. I’m the luckiest guy on the planet, and she reminds me (verbally!) of it every day 💙💙💙💙

So yeah, happy anniversary to us, and thank you Ingela, for putting up with me all of this time! (Sorry about the food poisoning 🦠🦠) by @betheplace

Perry’s back! This week on It’s Giving, it’s a family affair.

We’re sitting down together for a special episode dissecting the Macklemore x Ed Sheeran situation because if there was ever an example of where music and social justice collide, this is it.

Macklemore spoke up for Palestine, reportedly got pushed off the tour, and Ed gave us a both-sides statement and a teleprompter apology.

We talk about why staying “neutral” is still a choice, what Perry’s law school brain thinks the contracts actually say, and why Ed might be the Wonder Bread of the music industry.

This week on It’s Giving, @johannasamuels sits down with Ingela to talk about the courage it takes to put advocacy at the center of her work.

Johanna lives at the intersection of music, community, and grassroots organizing. Opening up about the digital festival she helped pull together with @benleemusic during the 2020 Georgia runoffs — that would raise thousands of dollars for @fairfightaction — she breaks down why turning toward hard conversations, even when it’s scary, matters so much to her.

Plus, she shares how her Jewish upbringing shaped her sense of responsibility, why she volunteers cooking meals at LA’s Downtown Women’s Center, and how she’s learned to hold nuance in a moment that leaves little room for it.

“My personal stance toward it is just to turn toward the thing, and try to walk the line of honesty, but with grace and kindness.”
