What a surprise and a joy to receive a book from a colleague!

This time was especially special because the book was Food Sense by Christopher Gardner, PhD.

What a great book!

And what a phenomenal researcher and human being. @cgardnerphd

I was so touched by the message Christopher wrote to me when he signed the book.

It is small gestures like these that are the big things in life. I just received the book, and I am already on page 143! 😊

I highly recommend this book.

During my meetings and classes today, a special guest accompanied me.

Can you see her to my right in the photo?

Do you find it distracting to have pets on the screen when you are in meetings or classes?

It was such a pleasure and an honor to speak at The Comprehensive Healing Conference on Tuesday, October 6th at the MGB Headquarters on Assembly Row.

I was invited to deliver a breakout session on "Prescribing Movement: The Future of Integrative Lifestyles." The session was one hour. It was interactive, and we were able to do some live coaching. The next session was the same content but a different experience because there were new learners in the room. The learners in the room created the beauty of the hour as they shared their own wisdom. I always learn from the participants in these breakout sessions.

One of the highlights for me is in the photo I shared! In that special photo are two special medical students with whom I have had the pleasure of working for 3 years. Cam and Jordan are surely going to be major leaders in medicine. They were the co-leaders of the Harvard Medical School Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group when they were first-years. I was so surprised and filled with joy when I saw them in the audience. These full-circle experiences warm my heart. ❤️

I feel so grateful to be able to serve as faculty at Harvard Medical School. It is a true honor in so many ways.

I am so grateful to my friend and colleague, Dr. Mechelle Palma, for inviting me to the Philippines to talk at the 10th Annual Conference of the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine! Dr. Palma is the President of the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine. We met in 2013 at a lifestyle medicine conference in Boston where I was speaking about coaching.

What a wonderful week I had in the Philippines. I was able to address several different audiences. This photo was taken at the opening ceremony for the 10th Annual Conference of the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine.

The President of the Philippine Medical Association and the President of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians. The opening festivities were quite formal, as you can see by the attire.

It was an honor and privilege to be part of the conference. I spoke about Engaging Patients in Lifestyle Medicine as the Keynote and the Global Lifestyle Medicine Movement during an afternoon breakout session.

Honored and delighted to co-author this paper with colleagues from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.

Shared medical appointments are a great way to help patients better understand their conditions and learn how to use lifestyle behaviors to help treat their conditions and, in some cases, even put their conditions into remission.

Here's a link to the paper. You can copy it and paste it into your browser.

Last week, I was invited to deliver a workshop and a couple of lectures at the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine's 10th Annual Conference. It was truly an honor.

For the pre-conference, I was invited to co-facilitate a workshop on coaching. I shared a PowerPoint about the latest research and then did a live coaching demonstration with a volunteer in the audience. It was an unforgettable experience. I am so grateful for this opportunity.

On the last day of Summer, September 21, 2026, I had the distinct honor and pleasure of meeting with the Harvard Medical School Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group (LMIG) in TMEC 304.

Last year's leaders were simply phenomenal, and they were all present last night when we introduced lifestyle medicine to the first-year medical students.

It was a wonderful meeting with nutritious and delicious food, rich conversation, and plenty of time for connection.

I am so lucky to serve as the faculty advisor for this Harvard Medical School interest group. We started the LMIG at HMS in 2008-2009 school year. We were the first medical school in the country to formalize lifestyle medicine into a student activity in a medical school in the form of an official interest group.

18 years later, we are still going strong.
Each year, truly remarkable medical school students step up to lead this interest group. I am delighted to be able to work with these passionate and talented individuals.

I am so excited that this book is now available. The first half covers the basics of lifestyle medicine, and the second half focuses on strategies for teaching the material to medical students, healthcare professional students, residents, physicians, and other learners.

You can find it on Amazon or Routledge Taylor and Francis Group.

Taylor and Francis Group is having a fall sale of 20% off, which puts the book at about $59.00. I don't know how long the sale will last.

Publisher's description:

"There is no longer any serious doubt that what individuals do in their daily lives profoundly impacts their short- and long-term health, quality of life, and risk of developing chronic diseases. Despite overwhelming evidence in this area, physicians often feel inadequately prepared to discuss these issues with their patients. This results from the relative lack of education for physicians in these components of lifestyle medicine. Authored by renowned cardiologist and lifestyle medicine researcher Dr. James Rippe and lifestyle medicine education and behavioral medicine expert Dr. Beth Frates, Academic Lifestyle Medicine: A Curriculum for Medical Educators blends state-of-the-art information on the robust medical literature supporting lifestyle medicine with an innovative approach to medical education.

This book starts with an extensive discussion of the robust evidence that underlies the major components of lifestyle medicine including physical activity, nutrition, weight management, substance abuse and addiction, sleep, and positive connections to others. This information is then linked to how this evidence can be used to lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, metabolic syndrome, brain health, cognitive function, and many other health issues. The authors then provide a specific framework for applying the principles of lifestyle medicine to all stages of medical education—from undergraduate to graduate training and continuing medical education."
