New location loading…

That’s right, I’m now displaying and selling my Refurbished Fruit collection at @hartwellraleigh! It’s always wise to shop small, so take a gander when you’re in Raleigh!

“Pale Orchid Stem” is a unique piece for me. I’ve painted flowers before, I’ve painted orchids before, the color palette isn’t new, nor is the shape nor composition. But this one is different, and it comes down to the embellishments. Rather than using more acrylic, or paint pens, or colored pencils, I added the final touches with a handful of oil pastels. They’re such a strange tool: water resistant, tacky, pigmented but not smooth. They pull in unpredictable ways and yet they sit on top of things with a worn in sort of texture. If I feel like a piece is too gentle, too easy, too straightforward, I add oil pastels. Always, they offer something rougher and less refined that reads like yarn or chewed edges, organic and alive and dynamic.
