💜💛HAPPY INTERSEX AWARNESS DAY💜💛

Today, October 26th, is Intersex Awareness Day—a day that holds deep personal significance for me as an intersex person. Intersex is about as common as having red hair (1.7% of the population) and refers to individuals who have sex characteristics (e.g., sex chromosomes, hormones, etc.) that are a mix of typically male or female. Intersex doesn't affect gender identity, which is the behavioural aspect, to put it simply.

At 16, right in the middle of my GCSEs, I was diagnosed with Swyer Syndrome, a moment that changed my life. My gonads were removed to reduce cancer risk, and it took time to process what this diagnosis meant for me. I struggled with feeling different and withdrew from friendships and other relationships, unsure how to talk about it or if anyone would understand. I worried people would misunderstand and think I am transgender or a man, which, to be clear, isn't the case. This also significantly impacted my academic performance during that crucial time.

Learning to accept and embrace my intersex identity wasn’t easy, but it has been one of the most empowering parts of my journey. It taught me resilience, self-acceptance, and the power of owning who I am. There were moments of doubt and times when I felt like hiding this part of myself, but over time, I realized that my story deserves to be heard.

I share this today because I know there are others who may feel as alone as I once did. Greater visibility and open conversations about intersex experiences are so important—if I'd known more about my community earlier, it might have lessened the fear and confusion I felt. I hope that by speaking out, others will feel less isolated and know they aren't alone.

Intersex Awareness Day is more than a day for recognition; it’s about advocating for our rights, raising awareness of our diverse bodies, and fostering a sense of belonging in a world that often doesn’t understand us. To my fellow intersex individuals: Your story matters. You matter. Let's continue to celebrate visibility, acceptance, and the beauty of diversity.
